The Grizzlies traded Wayne Selden Jr., MarShon Brooks and a second-rounder to the Bulls for Justin Holiday last week.
Memphis is somewhere around Holiday’s eighth NBA stop, depending on how you’re counting. He’s actually the oldest Holiday brother, which I hadn’t believed to be the case, and debuted as Jrue’s teammate in the same season Jrue was named an All-Star.
Jrue was drafted in 2009, before he turned nineteen and when Justin was twenty, in-between his sophomore and junior years at the University of Washington. Then Jrue established himself as a rising NBA star, all while Justin graduated from U-Dub in 2011 and then played the a year in Belgium.
The year after Belgium, 2012-2013, Justin was cut by the Cavaliers and Trail Blazers and signed with the Idaho Stampede. Jrue was named an All-Star and perhaps convinced the Sixers to sign his older brother, who debuted in April.
He played in Hungary the next season after Philly and Utah waived him. The year after that, he played in 59 regular season games for the Warriors and 11 minutes in the playoffs. He got a ring and a multi-year offer from the Hawks out of it, though.
From Atlanta, he was traded to the Bulls, who traded him to the Knicks. He signed with the Bulls in free-agency, who traded him last week. He played 22 minutes in Saturday’s 20-point loss in San Antonio.
New Orleans Pelicans
Call this the Holiday-special edition because Jrue is, of course, enjoying just a fantastic season with the Pelicans.
It’s his sixth season with New Orleans and his tenth in the NBA. The Pelicans gave up Nerlens Noel on draft night, and a future first-rounder, to get him and it’s turned out to have been a savvy move.
In his ten NBA seasons, he’s averaged over 15 points per game and played elite guard defense; yet, he’s only made the one All-Star team.
This season, he’s getting a legitimate 20 per game, (20.9) and averaging 8.5 assists, which are both career highs.
But even with Holiday’s production and one of the very best players in the world, the Pelicans are better than just the Suns in the Western Conference.
Nikola Mirotic went down with an ankle eleven games ago and the team has lost seven of its last ten, even after beating up on Cleveland Saturday night.
Even before Niko got hurt again, New Orleans was failing to thrive.
