Game 6 between the second seed Memphis Grizzlies and seventh seed Minnesota Timberwolves is set for tip-off on Friday, April 29th, 2021.
The Grizzlies took a 3-2 lead in the series following a come-from-behind effort with one of the sickest dunks in postseason history by Ja Morant and a clutch time equally impressive lay-in by the Most Improved Player.
Memphis will be attempting to close out the series while the Timberwolves’ backs are against the wall in this elimination game. This is the lone first-round series still active with the 76ers, Suns, and Mavericks all moving on to the second round with victories on Thursday.
The teams split their four games this season with Memphis winning on November 8th (125-118) in overtime and January 13th (116-108) while Minnesota won the November 20th (138-95) and February 24th (119-114) matches.
Minnesota owns the slim one-game (51 wins) edge all-time of the 101 regular-season matches played. This series marks the first time the franchises are playing in the postseason.
Memphis Grizzlies
While Ja Morant hasn’t necessarily had his typical influence on this series his effort in Game 5 was almost solely responsible for the comeback victory. With the Grizzlies down 13 points, Morant skyed over Malik Beasley for a dunk that set the FedEx Forum into a frenzy.
From there it was game on as the Grizzlies slowly chipped away at the lead finally taking over by a single point with 1:03 remaining off a Morant 3-point shot that came courtesy of Brandon Clarke skying above the rim to tap out the miss by Tyus Jones.
Two Morant free throws followed to push the lead to three, but Anthony Edwards responded with his own 3-pointer to draw the teams even.
The final scoring play involved the same two youngsters again when Edwards tried to go for the steal on an inbounds play and it gave Morant the lane to drive, jumping from the hash marks to lay in an acrobatic basket and put the Grizz up by two and held fast for the winning bucket.

Morant flirted with a triple-double of 30 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists plus three steals. Desmond Bane added 25 points, four rebounds, an assist, two steals, and three blocks.
Brandon Clarke was the x-factor of the game delivering a double-double of 21 points and 15 rebounds including nine offensive boards as well as three assists and a block.
Ziaire Williams (knee) was downgraded to doubtful, Steven Adams (quarantine) Killian Tillie (back), and Santi Aldama (knee) were downgraded to out Friday versus the Wolves.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Wolves looked poised to take the pivotal Game 5 on the road leading the majority of the game and holding a double-digit edge until the Morant dunk fueled the arena and that buzz ignited his teammates.
Karl-Anthony Towns delivered another standout performance with a double-double of 28 points and 12 rebounds. Edwards was impressive again with 22 points.
The other double-figure scorers for the Wolves were D’Angelo Russell and Taurean Prince with 12 and 10 points respectively.
The Wolves have no players on the injured reserve list.

Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
Of all the series these are the two most inexperienced clubs and many believe this is the series most likely to go the distance. In fact, after the three matches on Thursday, it’s the only first-round series left to be decided.
In the East, the semi-finals will feature the Bucks versus the Celtics and the 76ers versus the Heat. With the Mavericks winning they’ll face the Suns while the Warriors await the winner of this series.
Minnesota did a lot right but they’ve got to handle the boards better as the Grizzlies owned the glass 53-42 and crushed Minny on the offensive glass 18 to 6 which ignited 23 second-chance buckets.
The hardest game to win is the close-out game and with such a young squad it could be difficult, especially on the road where the Wolves fans will be ready to be the sixth man. Still, with a player of Morant’s talent and if Jaren Jackson Jr. can stay out of foul trouble they should be able to wrap this up.
Memphis has only played one game to their potential (Game 2) so are due for another, although the Wolves will be invested and playing with desperation.
