Game 4 between the second seed Memphis Grizzlies and seventh seed Minnesota Timberwolves is set for tip-off on Saturday, April 23rd, 2021.
The Grizzlies took a 2-1 lead in the series following a topsy-turvy Game 3 that witnessed multiple lead changes. Minnesota built a substantial 26-point lead and witnessed it dissipate when the Grizzlies locked down defensively and pulled ahead to win 104-95.
The Wolves won Game 1 (130-117) while the Grizzlies took Game 2 (124-96).
The teams split their four games this season with Memphis winning on November 8th (125-118) in overtime and January 13th (116-108) while Minnesota won the November 20th (138-95) and February 24th (119-114) matches.
Minnesota owns the slim one-game (51 wins) edge all-time of the 101 regular-season matches played. This series marks the first time the franchises are playing in the postseason.
Memphis Grizzlies
These two teams have much in common with both featuring a young rising star, youthful depth, talented coaches, and most importantly have the potential to rise up and become perennial playoff performers.
Even the character of these teams is one of bravado emulating their young leaders – the Grizzlies Ja Morant and Wolves Anthony Edwards.
Young teams brimming with that confidence are compelling particularly when they back it up by winning and serve up lit sound bites. Conversely, that bravado opens them up for criticism when they stumble and quickly shifts to being viewed as unfounded arrogance.
Again these two clubs fit those categories although the Grizzlies have demonstrated the ability to put the game first and the braggery second. They’ve fought through adversity winning without their star or key core players and most importantly consistency delivered wins.
Game 3 offered examples of both things as the Wolves jumped on the Grizzlies to open the match on a 12-0 run and finished that initial frame holding an 18-point lead that later ballooned to 26.
And in the perfect example of above, the Grizzlies stopped the celebration by limiting Minnesota to 12 points in the second and fourth quarters which ultimately erased a 26-point lead and led to victory.
Ja Morant served up a triple-double of 16 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds plus three blocks. Desmond Bane led the scoring with 26 points while Clarke was the x-factor offering 20 points and eight rebounds.
Dillon Brooks (foot) is questionable while Killian Tillie (back) and Santi Aldama (knee) were downgraded to out Saturday versus the Wolves.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Hey, I warned everyone about this team when I picked them as my West dark horse. They have all the talent in the world. But by the same token, they are a squad that wants to be viewed as – – well — their opponent.
Much like the Hawks of last season, the Wolves rose up the standings with a hot second half and sudden defensive improvement. While I predicted this rise, I also warned of the issue that could sideline them.
This series offers the perfect small sample of precise issues plaguing this squad. Go back to the play-in Game versus the Clippers where the Wolves celebrated that victory as if they’d won the title.
It was understandable given the extended absence from postseason play, but instead of learning from that mistake of that overzealous outburst, they doubled down following the upset in Game 1.
Again, it was as if the Wolves had accomplished much more than winning the opening game of a first-round series. Game 3 provided the Wolves’ greatest lesson as they had the game won – celebrated too early and got spanked for their arrogance.
The two leaders of the Wolves offered the perfect example of this confidence-arrogance factor. Star Karl-Anthony Towns collected double-doubles in each of Game 1 (29-points,13 rebounds) and Game 2 (15 points, 11 rebounds).
But following those loud sound bites after Game 1, Towns’ performance in Game 2 offered evidence of putting the cart before the horse as he committed five turnovers and had to sit because of his five personal fouls.
Game 3 was more of the same as he attempted only four shots, was again in foul trouble (5 fouls) and guilty of turnovers (5).
And perhaps the guiltiest of the Wolves is veteran guard Patrick Beverley who granted has brought a level of defensive competitiveness but by the same token isn’t doing his team any favors by acting like they’ve arrived before they’ve even won a playoff series.
Beverley offered 10 points in Game 1 ( 4 of 8), 6 points in Game 2 (1 of 6), regressed to 1 of 6 in Game 2 and while he collected 14 points in game 2 he shot 0 of 5 from deep and inexplicably took nine more shots than KAT.

Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
Taylor Jenkins made tweaks in Game 3 by sitting big man Steven Adams who Karl-Anthony Towns got the best of in Game 1.
But facing the likes of Jaren Jackson Jr., Brandon Clarke, and Xavier Tillman proved to be the perfect defensive call as they held KAT to eight points and four shots in Game 3.
Moving ahead to this pivotal Game 4, it’s time for Wolves’ coach Chris Finch to make adjustments and quite frankly he might want to remind his squad if they want to be viewed like the Grizzlies it’s time they stop talking and leave it all on the court!
I buy into Edwards and Russell being ready but something about how KAT dismissed the media after Game 3 left me believing this teams will head back to Memphis with the Grizzlies looking to clinch.
