Sunday, March 6th finds the Memphis Grizzlies facing the Houston Rockets for the third meeting of the season. In the initial meeting between the clubs on November 15th, the Grizzlies routed the Rockets 136-102 and followed it up with a 113-106 victory on December 11th.
Houston will also host the final game of the season series on March 20th.
The Grizzlies are playing a back-to-back set having defeated the Magic 124-96 on the front side of the set while the Rockets last played Friday getting routed 101-116 by the Nuggets.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Grizzlies taking two of the three contests. The Rockets hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 63 of their 104 matches
Memphis Grizzlies
On January 8th Dillon Brooks suffered a severe ankle injury that was expected to keep him out between three to five weeks. Saturday marked the eight-week mark and yet he remains sidelined.
With the Grizzlies losing three of their last six matches getting his energy and production reinserted into the lineup would offer a big boost, particularly with the Warriors in a slump and the Suns mired by injury.
Opportunities like this don’t happen all the time, especially this late in the season. While the Suns may be out of reach sitting 8.0 games ahead with the victory versus the Magic the Grizzlies overtook the Warriors for the second seed.
If they could get back Brooks now it would help them retain that second seed and try to go on a winning streak to catch the Suns.
GM Zach Kleiman and coach Taylor Jenkins both suggested an early March return and this would’ve been a great game to ease him back in but alas he’s still on the injury report.
Yves Pons (thigh) is questionable for Sunday while Dillon Brooks remains listed as out indefinitely.
Houston Rockets
Despite the Nuggets not having Nikola Jokic available it didn’t matter as DeMarcus Cousins stepped in for the ailing MVP as was equally effective.
The Rockets have lost 12 games in a row and should be desperate for a win but they are also invested in getting one of the bottom three records in order to improve their shot at winning the top draft pick which features some quality big men this season.
In the loss to Denver, Christian Wood led the way with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds plus five assists, and a block. The rookies also had big nights with Jalen Green scoring 18 and Alperen Sengun collecting a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Dennis Schroder (ankle) is questionable while Usman Garuba (wrist) was downgraded to out Sunday versus Memphis. John Wall remains on the shelf as the Rockets failed to find a trade partner and are in a stalemate regarding a buy-out given his massive salary.
