Sunday, March 20th finds the Memphis Grizzlies facing the Houston Rockets for the fourth and final time this season. Memphis leads the series 2-1 with victories on November 15th (136-102) and December 11th (113-106) while the Rockets took the last meeting on March 6th (123-112).
Both squads last played on Friday with the Grizzlies losing 120-105 to the Hawks while the Rockets lost a nailbiter (118-121) to the Pacers.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Grizzlies taking two of the three contests. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Rockets in 64 of their 105 matches
Memphis Grizzlies
This is the final match of the four-game road trip for Memphis who started out beating the Thunder and Pacers prior to the loss in Atlanta. Although the Hawks are motivated to win to improve their play-in seeding they were without both Trae Young and John Collins.
However, this is the time of year when players’ bodies are feeling the wear and tear and for clubs like the Grizzlies it’s better to be safe than sorry, particularly with the core.
That was the case for Ja Morant who sat the last game with back tightness and left in the final frame versus the Hawks with some knee soreness. Post-game head coach Taylor Jenkins stated they are just being cautious.
It’s unlikely the Grizz will catch the Suns who are nine games up on them but they will pay attention to the Warriors who are just a half-game back but will be without their superstar (Stephen Curry) for at least two weeks after injuring a ligament in his foot.
The loss ended a four-game winning streak for Memphis and while Morant left early he still led the team in scoring with 29 points, three rebounds, and four assists. Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane each chipped in 15 points while Dillon Brooks offered 11 as the other double-figure scorers.
Big man Steven Adams pulled down 11 boards.
Ja Morant left the last game nursing a sore knee and is downgraded to out for this match. Killian Tillie (knee) is also downgraded to out versus the Rockets.
Houston Rockets
It was a yo-yo match of back and forth on Friday versus the Pacers as the Rockets took the first quarter and came out of the lockers at halftime blistering hot putting up 39 points to Indy’s 22. But the Pacers won the second and fourth quarters and more importantly got the extra three points before the buzzer sounded.
In some regards, it was a win-win to see the team play well offensively and still get the loss to help their tanking efforts. The Rockets Big 3 all performed well with Christian Wood posting a double-double of 32 points and 13 rebounds plus seven assists, two steals, and three blocks.
Jalen Green scored 20 while Kevin Porter Jr. added 19 and the other top rookie on the team Alperen Sengun also delivered double-figures with 15 points and added four rebounds plus three blocks.
Eric Gordon (illness) is questionable for Sunday. Usman Garuba (wrist) is out indefinitely. John Wall remains on the shelf as the Rockets failed to find a trade partner and are in a stalemate regarding a buy-out given his massive salary.

Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Houston Rockets NBA Prediction:
Even without Morant, the Grizzlies won’t need much motivation after losing to the shorthanded Hawks Friday and the loss to the Rockets on March 6th still fresh in their memories.
