Monday, May 9th, the second-seeded Memphis Grizzlies, and the third-seeded Golden State Warriors play Game 4 of the Western Conference semi-finals. Golden State lead the series 2-1 after a dominant 142-112, Game 3 victory.
The Grizzlies won the 2021-22 season series 3-1 while the Warriors hold the all-time advantage having won 51 times of the club’s 91 regular-season meetings.
This is the second time the clubs are playing in the postseason with Golden State having won 4-2 in the 2015 semi-finals, ironically the same season they won their first of three titles in four years.
Memphis Grizzlies
The biggest question entering Game 4 is whether the Grizzlies will have their superstar Ja Morant available. He left Game 3 mid-way through the final frame visibly limping having aggravated his knee.
Morant had been limping at different times in the match despite another strong performance. After the game, coach Taylor Jenkins implied the injury occurred due to Jordan Poole pulling on Morant’s knee.
Memphis sent in the play to the league office, but a review of the play sure looks like Morant likely sustained the injury when he appeared to overextend his legs before Poole even touched him.

An earlier play looks even more harmful to Morant as this tweeter fan noted. Morant still managed to produce a strong effort offering 34 points, seven assists, three rebounds, and three steals.
For the first time in the series Desmond Bane had a more typical performance with 16 points, three rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
Comparitively he attempted 10 and seven shots in the games in Memphis scoring nine and five points so this was a substantial improvement.
Jaren Jackson Jr. and DeAnthony Melton scored 15 and 12 points respectively as the other double-figure contributors.
Morant (knee) is doubtful for Monday. Santi Aldama (knee) is day-to-day while Killian Tillie (knee) is out indefinitely.
Golden State Warriors
Game 3 offered an offensive outburst from the Warriors who scored the second most playoff points (142) in their franchise history. Six Warriors scored in double-figures led by Stephen Curry with 30 points and six assists although he struggled from the perimeter (2-8).
Klay Thompson played much better after shooting 6 of 19 (3 of 10 from deep) and 5 of 19 (2 of 12 from deep) in Memphis. The sniper scored 21 points hitting 4 of 6 from deep and added nine rebounds.
Jordan Poole continued his strong playoff showing offering 27 points off the bench while Andrew Wiggins scored 17 points with his aggressive early play kick starting the Dubs offense.
And the two players who replaced the minutes of the injured Gary Payton II each impacted the match with Jonathan Kuminga scoring 18 points in 18 minutes while Otto Porter Jr. started in the third quarter offering 13 points, four rebounds, three assists, and hit 3 of 5 deep balls.
James Wiseman (knee) is done for the season.

While the Grizzlies were 20-5 in games Morant didn’t play this season not having their superstar in a playoff game is a drastically different situation.
The fact Memphis is seemingly trying to paint Poole with the same brush as what Dillon Brooks did to Payton is a reach and to be frank it’s the politics of a basketball series that both clubs are eager to win.
Having witnessed some of the most controversial officiated games this postseason the whistle has become almost as impactful to some games as the players.
Evidence of that fact comes from the Suns – Mavericks series and Game 4, where at least half of Chris Paul’s fouls were questionable while the Mavericks were able to be physical and aggressive without penalty.
Perhaps the difference in this series is Steve Kerr would probably react differently than Monty Williams and get ejected before he would let his team just accept a biased whistle (especially at home).
That said, I think the Warriors will take this series easily but I’m assuming the officials will help the Grizzlies keep Game 4 closer than the 10 point spread.
