Thursday, April 7th finds the Memphis Grizzlies playing the Denver Nuggets for the fourth and final meeting this season. The Grizzlies will be seeking the season sweep having won on November 1st (106-97), November 3rd (108-106), and January 21st (122-118).
Both teams last played on Tuesday with the Grizzlies losing 115-121 to the Jazz in overtime while the Nuggets lost 97-116 to the Spurs.
The Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 60 of their 98 meetings. Last season the squads played three times with the Nuggets taking all three contests.
Memphis Grizzlies
Despite not playing having Ja Morant or Dillon Brooks the Grizzlies almost got the win versus Utah on Tuesday. They pushed the Jazz into overtime and no doubt there were some anxious players on that Utah bench thinking of earlier games they held big leads and lost.
The loss perhaps pointed to something Memphis should expect in the upcoming playoffs as they were held scoreless for four and half minutes in overtime.
If they have Morant and Brooks back and healthy however that situation is likely very different. Speaking of Morant he remains sidelined having missed nine of the last 10 games.
While most players would want a game to get their rhythm back the Grizzlies are unusual in that regard because Morant doesn’t have to be the leading scorer for Memphis to win.
Furthermore, his impact comes via quarterbacking the game, driving the pace and much of his scoring comes in the paint which doesn’t require as much timing or rhythm as jump shooting does.
Jaren Jackson Jr. led the way for Memphis with 28 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. The latter gave him 172 blocks on the season – a league-high and also established a new franchise benchmark as he passed Marc Gasol’s previous high.
Tyus Jones (24), Desmond Bane (23), and De’Anthony Melton (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Dillon Brooks (hip) is questionable for Thursday while Tyrell Terry (foot) and Killian Tillie (knee) are out. Ja Morant (knee) is out indefinitely.
Denver Nuggets
The loss to the Spurs had the Nuggets head coach Michael Malone and several of the players upset as they failed to beat a team they should and for the moment stopped them from clinching a playoff berth meaning they could still fall into the play-in group.
“We wasted a golden opportunity,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. “I just didn’t think we had the requisite focus, determination, urgency, desperation — whatever adjective you want to use. I just didn’t think we had it tonight.”4Nikola Jokic (41 points, 17 rebounds) and Aaron Gordon (18 points, 13 rebounds) each delivered double-double efforts.
The Nuggets have just two games remaining including this match and close out the season hosting the Lakers. Denver got a little lucky because the Wolves also lost on Tuesday which kept them two games back of Denver.
JaMychal Green (wrist) is questionable while Zeke Nnaji (hamstring) was downgraded to out Thursday. Vlatko Cancar (fractured foot), Jamal Murry (ACL), and Michael Porter Jr. (back surgery) are out indefinitely.

Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction
Seeding remains a mystery as Denver could finish as high as fifth, stay in their current sixth seed or drop to seventh. Again Denver lucks out since Minny has a tougher closing segment facing the Spurs and Bulls who are both motivated to win to help their own placement.
To nab the fifth seed they would need Utah to lose both remaining games (Suns, Blazers) and win both of theirs. To that end, I suspect the Nuggets will bring much more focus to this match in order to cement that playoff berth.
