Memphis Grizzlies

Memphis managed just 89 points in Portland on Wednesday night in a blowout loss. The Grizzlies kept pace with Dallas at the bottom of the division and were led by Chandler Parsons’ 16 points.

These two teams will play on Friday night and Sunday to wrap up the four-game season series. Memphis has won the first two games, one at home and one on the road, by a combined 40 points.

The Grizzlies are bumped, bruised, and battered. They also aren’t in a rush to get any of the veterans or more proven youngsters back to the court with no incentive to win again this season.

Mike Conley, Jonas Valanciunas, CJ Miles, Dillon Brooks, Joakim Noah, Kyle Anderson, and Avery Bradley all missed Wednesday’s game with various injuries and I’m not sure any of them will be back for this game.

Unless Memphis gets some help in the form of any of these guys returning to the lineup, it’s not going to score enough to win another game. Valanciunas, Miles, Jackson, Brooks, and Anderson are all officially done.

Dallas Mavericks

Luka Doncic is still fighting like hell, trying to win that Rookie of the Year Award. It felt good when he was playing well and this team was winning. Now, it’s just kind of sad, watching him go out there and put up numbers for a dying team, just trying to win an award that every figured was a foregone conclusion a couple of months ago.

The Mavs do have more wins than the Hawks, which isn’t exactly a fair assessment of the two leading rookies, who, by the way, were traded for one another on the night of the NBA Draft.

But the Hawks are winning more games lately and still have an outside chance of catching Dallas with a strong finish. Young’s numbers aren’t quite there, though the two are just about even if you throw out the first month or two.

Luka will win it for the same reason officials in football don’t overrule a call on the field without compelling video evidence. He’s been the pick for far too long to give it to Young for questionable reasons at the end. It’s an anticlimactic way to win a major award like the Rookie of the Year.
