Dallas and Memphis enter this contest as the 12th and 14th teams, respectively, in the Western Conference. Although the Mavericks are holding onto the slightest of hopes that they can earn a postseason berth, teams like the Sacramento Kings and even L.A. Lakers are in much better position to make the leap into the top eight.

The Grizzlies are the definition of a one-sided team at this point in their rebuild. Truth is, this has been the case for quite some time. The franchise didn’t earn the moniker “Grit and Grind” for nothing. But it’s been impressive to see a new group (and more importantly, a new core for the future) rally around veteran Mike Conley.

Against Dallas, the Grizzlies need to channel their inner Grit and Grind with one specific goal in mind: make life difficult for Luka Doncic.
Doncic is the NBA’s runaway Rookie of the Year this season, and he’s very good at scoring against elite defense. That step-back jumper of his may be rivaled by only reigning and possible 2019 MVP James Harden, meaning even the tighest of defenses often aren’t enough with the now-20-year-old able to create as much space as he does.
Against the Mavs, a double team here may become necessary. Often times a team can get away with letting the star go wild while looking to contain the opposing role players, but Doncic is also a good distributor, making the plan of attack a tricky one.
But when it comes down to it, Doncic is single-handedly winning this group games.
The Grizz need to make him uncomfortable, and that’s priority No. 1 by a long shot.

Dallas Mavericks
Knowing the Grizzlies’ game plan, the Mavericks (and Doncic, in particular) need to get the role players involved.
Tim Hardaway Jr., for instance, is still a thread to go for 20 on any given night. But here’s the catch: The next-highest scorer on the roster is J.J. Barea averaging just 10.9 points per game.
Even more problematic is that Barea isn’t even on the floor for the rest of the season. He’s currently recovering from an Achilles injury that could ultimately be the end of his 13-year career.
This Dallas team needs to get players involved, as the Doncic Train may hit some speed bumps in this one.
