The Memphis Grizzlies face the Dallas Mavericks for the first time this season on Saturday, October 22nd. The Southwest Division rivals will play each other four times this season. Memphis will host again on March 13th while the Mavericks will host games on March 11th and 20th.
This is the Grizzlies’ first back-to-back set having played and beaten the Rockets 129-122 on Friday. The Mavericks have been off since their opening match on Wednesday when they lost a double-digit lead to the Suns so are looking for their first win of the season.
Last season, the squads played four times with Dallas winning three of the four contests. The Mavericks hold the advantage all-time having won 72 times of the club’s 104 meetings.
Memphis Grizzlies
The second game of the season wasn’t a cakewalk by any means for the Grizzlies who had to rally to get the ‘W’. The upstart Rockets youngsters came out firing winning both the first and second quarters.
But, Ja Morant had winning on his mind and he made sure his team accomplished that goal. Morant scored an amazing 49 points including hitting five 3-point shots.
It was the second game in a row that Desmond Bane struggled with his shot. In the opener, Bane shot 6 of 22 (3 of 13 from deep) and versus the Rockets he shot 3 of 16 (3 of 10 from deep). That’s a cumulative 9 of 38 from the field and 6 of 23 from deep through two matches.
It could just be a cold start for Bane but it’s also not unusual for a player of his ilk to face more pressure after a breakthrough season. He’ll need to snap out of this funk or find a way to be more efficient in order to take some pressure off Morant.
John Konchar has been the player stepping up and been the most consistent helper to Morant through two matches offering 17 points and five rebounds in the win versus Houston.
Neither Dillon Brooks (thigh) or Zaire Williams (knee) played Friday and are likely out again Saturday. Jaren Jackson Jr. (foot) and Danny Green (knee) remain out until Dec and February respectively.
Dallas Mavericks
It looked like the Mavericks were going to collect an easy victory in their opening game of the season holding a 22-point advantage but the Suns just kept chipping away.
While Chris Paul was on the bench, Devin Booker and a reserve unit tied the game and eventually won the match in the closing seconds of clutch time.
Doncic who led the Mavericks with 35 points, nine rebounds, and six assists took the last shot but it hit the front rim making the Suns’ comeback complete.
Christian Wood delivered 25 points and eight rebounds in his Mavericks debut while Spencer Dinwiddie (15) and Reggie Bullock (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Although many pundits believe the Mavericks can be a home-court seed and granted Doncic is an MVP talent this team sure feels like they need another asset to increase their scoring options.
Frank Ntilikina (ankle) and Davis Bertans (knee) are questionable for Saturday.

Dallas will have the decided rest advantage and is eager to garner its first victory of the 2022-23 campaign.
The match will be decided by the Mavericks’ ability to stop the Grizzlies in transition and whether Memphis can disrupt Dallas by creating turnovers via steals/blocks (categories they dominated in 2022).
The big question is whether Morant will get any help besides what Konchar has offered. He’ll need Bane, Jones or someone else to step up and help if Memphis wants to remain unbeaten.
Although I think the Mavericks will prevail to capture the win I like Memphis to keep it close because Morant seems driven to make a statement this season.
