On Saturday, February 26th, the Memphis Grizzlies and Chicago Bulls will complete their season series. Memphis won the January 17th match 119-106.
Both teams returned to action on Thursday with the Grizzlies losing 114-119 to the Timberwolves while the Bulls defeated the Hawks 112-108.
Last season, the teams played twice with the Grizzlies winning both contests. The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 29 of their 52 matches.
Memphis Grizzlies
Although Memphis owns the league’s second-best road record (21-10) they weren’t able to channel that prowess in the first game back from the break. In fact, they did something they rarely do – – coughing up a double-digit lead.
It didn’t help the starting backcourt both struggled as Ja Morant shot 7 of 25 for 20 points while Desmond Bane shot 5 of 15 for 14 points. Morant suffered cramping and left the court briefly due to a sore hip.
Jaren Jackson Jr. offered a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds with an assist, two steals, and three blocks. Ziaire Williams also scored 21 points.
Memphis’effort on the glass kept them in the game as Steven Adams grabbed 12 boards as one of six Grizzlies who registered five or more rebounds resulting in a 59-42 edge on the glass punctuated by 26 offensive boards.
Yves Pons (thigh) is questionable for Saturday. Dillon Brooks (ankle) remains out.
Chicago Bulls
DeMar DeRozan’s MVP stock got a boost with his recent streak of 35 point scoring efforts but in truth, it was bolstered more by the fact he’s kept the Bulls in the mix for the top seed while the team has dealt with copious injuries.
With their best three defenders out, they’ve also had to navigate Zach LaVine missing games nursing a sore knee.
Fortunately, a visit to a specialist provided positive reinforcement he won’t miss time but Chicago will likely rest him in one game of back-to-back sets or busy segments like during three games in four nights.
As for the defensive trio, it’s positive news across the board. Lonzo Ball has begun to sprint which is significant given his injury was a minor meniscus tear. He’s been out since January 14th missing the last 20 games.
Alex Caruso was projected to miss up to eight weeks after a wrist fracture. Halfway into that timeline, he’s missed 16 games and coach Billy Donovan updated he should progress to working with the ball at the end of this week.
The surprise is Patrick Williams who was expected to miss the season but Donovan is now optimistic will return. He’s progressed to dribbling and shooting but needs to continue to strengthen the wrist before he can participate in contact drills.
Chicago hopes he’ll reach that stage prior to season end and get into some games to shake off the rust.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Memphis are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games.
- Chicago is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 8 of Memphis’ last 9 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 9 of Chicago’s last 13 games.
Memphis Grizzlies vs. Chicago Bulls NBA Analysis:
For the first time since December 23rd, Memphis lost back-to-back contests. Of their 20 losses, 12 occurred in consecutive matches though 10 of those happened in the first two months.
Look for them to be extremely aggressive forcing pace and play to their strengths such as forcing turnovers, crashing the glass plus the intangibles of steals and blocks.
While the Grizzlies could’ve used the grittiness of Dillon Brooks to combat the Wolves’ length and physicality the Bulls will definitely miss Ball and Caruso’s defense to counter this young athletic Memphis crew.
With the spread listed as even, it’s a coin toss that I see the Grizzlies winning.
