On Thursday, March 31st, the Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz will meet for the third and final time this season. LA won both prior matches on January 17th (101-95) and February 16th (106-101).
Both teams last played on Tuesday with the Jazz coughing up yet another 24 point plus lead in the 115-121 loss to the Clippers while the Lakers got routed 110-128 by the Mavericks.
All-time the Lakers hold the advantage winning 113 of 191 matches. Last season the teams played three times with the Jazz winning two of the three contests in the season series.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers are mired in a slump and yo-yo-ing back and forth between the 10th and 11th seeds in definite jeopardy of missing any postseason play including the play-in tournament.
LA has the third hardest schedule remaining with seven games to play, four on the road, three at home, and two back-to-back sets.
They’ll also face five opponents seeded sixth or higher including the Jazz, Nuggets (twice), Suns, and Warriors as well as another date versus the team fighting them for positioning in the play-in portion of the ladder.
That both LeBron James and Anthony Davis are dealing with injuries certainly isn’t ideal. Media stories are now leading with the fact LeBron will likely play if he can in order to win the scoring title.
And in those same articles or TV opinion pieces, the majority don’t believe they’ll make the play-in given that schedule compared to the Spurs and Pelicans albeit, they have nowhere near the experience with pivotal matches at this time of year like LA does.
Wenyen Gabriel (ankle) is questionable while LeBron James (ankle) is out Thursday. Anthony Davis (calf) and Kendrick Nunn (knee) are out indefinitely.
Utah Jazz
Not long ago with the Warriors stumbling it appeared like the Jazz were poised to move up into third but they’ve stumbled during the stretch.
Similar to how the Cavaliers and Bulls are dropping in the East, the Jazz is experiencing a similar fate having dropped to sixth. Yet, Utah isn’t a young developing team like Cleveland and Chicago.
They have great constancy so their free fall is a red flag. Injuries clearly aren’t helping but the majority of their core is playing so this feels like an internal issue.
Games offer entire segments where they just don’t defend or give the effort necessary which again, is concerning. As a TV panelist noted this week — I don’t think the Jazz ever got over losing to the Clippers last year and the trust level simply isn’t there.
Bojan Bogdanovic (wrist), and Danuel House Jr. (ankle) are questionable while Hassan Whiteside (foot) and Trent Forrest (concussion) were downgraded to out Thursday. Udoka Azubuike (ankle) is lost for the season.

Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. Utah Jazz NBA Analysis:
It sure feels like the Lakers’ brain trust and top players already know their season is likely over. Russell Westbrook won’t admit that — and I’m not sure he should have to.
He may not have delivered to the level the franchise wanted but he’s played his best ball of the season recently and certainly is the main reason why the Lakers are losing.
Both teams are desperate to right the ship but if LeBron isn’t on the court the Jazz have the decided advantage (they would with him too actually) and should cover the spread.
