They beat the Mavericks on the road on Friday night in an overtime thriller that saw both James and Luka Doncic go for triple-doubles. James scored thirty-nine points, dropped sixteen dimes, and grabbed a dozen rebounds in one of his most dominant individual performances as a Laker.
The victory in Dallas was also special because it marked the return and season debut of Kyle Kuzma, who played nineteen minutes off the bench and scored nine points.
Dwight Howard also played a team-high twenty-seven minutes off the bench. He’s been productive in his first five games in his second tour with the Lakers, averaging just over five points per game on 70% from the field and more than seven boards in twenty-one minutes.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs were in Golden State on Friday where they punished the Warriors, 127–110.

DeJounte Murray didn’t play. He was listed on the injury report with a knee so perhaps it was just to get him some rest. Remember, he tore his ACL just before last season so San Antonio will take it easy with their young point guard.
Murray is averaging thirteen points, eight rebounds, and five assists in twenty-three minutes per game through his first four games this season. He’s averaging 2.3 steals per game and playing his typically stellar defense. He was the youngest player to be named to an NBA All-Defensive Team as a rookie two years ago.
The Spurs’ defense hasn’t even been that good with Murray and Derrick White leading the perimeters charge. It will be when it has to be, though.
This team does a lot of stuff well. It can go inside; it can go outside; it has youth; it has experience; and it has the best coach in the game. The Spurs look like a team people slept on early on this season.
