An early evening start for the Los Angeles Lakers and Indiana Pacers on Saturday with two teams who have different agendas.
The Los Angeles Lakers have cemented the top spot in the Western Conference but are desperately in need of finding an offensive rhythm.
While the Pacers lost for the first time in the seeding games as they are fighting to keep their fifth place seeding and hold off the 76ers who they have an identical record to but hold the tiebreak against.
The Pacers won the December 17th meeting between the clubs 105-102.
Los Angeles Lakers
Although Frank Vogel has the benefit of resting his stars knowing the Lakers have cemented their top seed there are a number of other issues to address.
LeBron James sat out the last game citing a ‘sore groin’ which on the surface might just be a way to get him rest but his groin was the issue last season when LeBron missed games.
Perhaps more concerning is the Lakers anemic offense that ranks dead last in the bubble. It’s not just the perimeter (23.4 percent) where they’re struggling it’s all over the court (40.8 percent from the field).
Another concern is the inconsistency of Anthony Davis who vacillates between aggressive offensive performances and disappearing completely.
Through his five seeding games his point total is like a yo-yo: 34 vs. Clippers, 14 vs. Raptors, 42 vs. Jazz, 9 vs. Thunder, 17 vs. Rockets.
Although Davis is also nursing some bumps and bruises he’s expected to play Saturday, while Alex Caruso (neck) and James (groin) are both questionable.
Indiana Pacers
Pacers wing T.J. Warren probably hopes the NBA never leaves the bubble given his performances in the seeding games. He came back to earth a bit with 16 points in the loss to the Suns but posted 53, 36, and 34 points in the prior matches.
Nate McMillan continues to find the right buttons to push for this scrappy Pacers club who’ve won without Victor Oladipo for the majority of the season and now are winning without their All-Star big man Domantas Sabonis who exited Orlando to try to get his plantar fasciitis under control.
Even the loss to the red hot Suns wasn’t that concerning as it was the Pacers’ third game in four days.
In the loss to Phoenix, Malcolm Brogdon led the way with 25 points and was joined by MylesTurner (17), Warren (16), and Oladipo (16) as double-figure contributors.
