On Wednesday, February 9th, the Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers play for the final time this season. The Lakers won two of the three prior meetings on December 31st (139-106) and February 2nd (99-94) while Portland won the November 6th match (105-90).
Both teams are playing a back-to-back set with the Lakers losing 110-125 to the Bucks while the shorthanded, revamped Blazers lost 95-113 to the lottery-bound Magic.
Last season, the teams played three times with Portland winning two of the three contests. The Lakers hold the all-time record having bested the Blazers in 125 of their 236 matches.
Los Angeles Lakers
It’s a given neither of these teams are happy with how their season has gone. LA would like to be doing what the Blazers currently are which is revamping their roster but they are hampered by three massive superstar contracts.
Teams aren’t lining up to take Russell Westbrook off the Lakers hands especially with another full season on his deal ($47+M). LA’s front office and PR group have been active planting articles with “Lakers are rumored to be interested in…” hoping to generate interest.
But if fans are laughing at those ridiculous articles it’s a given GMs are too. A recent article had LA trying to pry Gary Trent Jr. from the Raptors for Dwight Howard, DeAndre Jordan, Talen Horton Tucker and potentially a pick.
If Nick Nurse isn’t playing the majority of his bench can you imagine the above trio would interest him? Um – that’s a big NO! It seems like the Lakers see a player succeed like GTJ’s recent 30-point scoring streak and throw out a line hoping that will result in action.
In the loss to Milwaukee despite stars LeBron James (27 points, eight assists, five rebounds) and Anthony Davis (22 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three blocks) performing well the Bucks rolled over them with ease.
Howard (back) is questionable for Wednesday. Carmelo Anthony (hamstring) and Kendrick Nunn (knee) are out indefinitely.
Portland Trail Blazers
No team has been as active as the Blazers heading into the trade deadline on Thursday. The first move came on the weekend with Portland sending Norman Powell and Robert Covington to the Clippers for Keon Johnson, Eric Bledsoe and Justise Winslow.
On Tuesday, the other shoe dropped with the long rumored move of CJ McCollum occurring though not to any of the teams considered as contenders. Instead of heading to Philly for Ben Simmons CJ heads to New Orleans.
The specific deal sends McCollum, Larry Nance Jr. and Tony Snell to the Pels in exchange for Josh Hart, Tomas Satoransky, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Didi Silva Louzada plus a 2022 protected first round draft choice and two future second-round picks.
Obviously the big question is whether the Blazers go all-in and trade Lillard now who said he wouldn’t be interested in staying “just for a draft pick” which certainly seems like the direction Portland is headed this season.
Keon Johnson (ankle) and Eric Bledsoe (Achilles) are both questionable for Wednesday. Cody Zeller (knee surgery), Damian Lillard (abdominal surgery), and Nassir Little (shoulder) are all out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Lakers are 7-3 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Lakers are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 matches against the Heat
- The over/under is 3-7 in the teams last 10 head to head matches
Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
Once again the Lakers get the benefit of timing playing the Blazers right after two big trades and with Lillard out. That should equate to an easy victory but then again, LA have taken several lottery teams for granted. Will the new players be available?
If so, watch for the new guys to try to impress in their debut. Still, this should be an easy win for LA.
