Sunday, March 13th the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns meet for the third of four scheduled matches this season.
The Suns are up 2-0 in the series winning on October 22nd (115-105) and December 21st (108-90) matches. The final meeting will occur on April 5th with Phoenix hosting.
Both teams last played on Friday with the Lakers winning 122-109 versus the Wizards while the Suns fell 117 -112 to the Raptors.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Suns winning two of the three contests. The Lakers hold the all-time record with 146 wins in 257 matches versus the Suns.
Los Angeles Lakers
It’s been quite a week for LeBron James who scored back-to-back 50 point games at home becoming the first to accomplish that feat since Kobe.
That both performances resulted in wins was the positive but at 37 you have to wonder how many times James can go to this well and what the impact will be on him later in the season.
What we don’t know is whether James is going crazy with the scoring to ensure his team gets to the postseason or if this is an effort to reach personal milestones. Given how brutal the Lakers have been this season I’d lean to the latter (and don’t blame him one bit if that’s his goal).
Malik Monk (21), Talen Horton-Tucker (15), and Austin Reaves (12) were the other double-figure contributors.
Monk (shoulder) is probable, while LeBron James (knee) and Horton-Tucker (ankle) are questionable to play Sunday in Phoenix. Anthony Davis (knee) and Kendrick Nunn (knee) are out indefinitely.
Phoenix Suns
The Suns lost on their home court for just the eighth time on Friday. It wasn’t a shocking outcome given the prior meeting in Toronto came down to the final minute to decide.
What it did point out is the type of teams that the Suns could struggle against this postseason. Phoenix has played everyone well but the two types of teams who perform the best against them are long, athletic defensive squads or perimeter defensive teams.
The latter requires the opponent to be hot from outside which isn’t always a given either. That would make the Grizzlies, Jazz and Warriors their toughest opponents based on the above dynamics.
And if Jamal Murray returns for the Nuggets it could shift the onus on that series.
In the loss to the Raptors, it never felt like Phoenix would win that game except when the refs took over in a stretch awarding two fouls against Gary Trent Jr. for his 3-point shot including assessing a flagrant one.
In both situations, Cameron Payne ran into GTJ and flopped (something he did throughout the game). Monty Williams needs to talk to Payne about this – he got away with it Friday but social media was lit up with how obvious it was so expect the league to be watching for it now.
He did lead the Suns in scoring (24) but that was also because Nick Nurse’s game plan was to primarily focus on Devin Booker (22) and Deandre Ayton (16).
Mikal Bridges (18) and Jae Crowder (13) were the other double-figure scorers.
Cameron Johnson (quad) was downgraded to out on Sunday. Chris Paul (thumb), Dario Saric (knee), and Frank Kaminsky (knee) are out indefinitely.

Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
The Suns will be looking to clean up areas of the game where they stumbled on Friday such as rebounding (particularly the offensive glass) and take better care of the ball since they had 16 turnovers that led to 25 points.
As for the Lakers assuming LeBron plays they need someone to help him score but I wonder if opponents have just decided to let James score and shut everyone else down.
Either way, the Suns get back in the win column today.
