Friday, October 28th, the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves play for the first time this season. Minnesota will host again on March 31st while the Lakers host on March 3rd.
LA enters this contest still seeking their first win of the season having lost to the Nuggets 99-110 while the Wolves got back in the win column having bested the Spurs 134-122.
Last season, the teams played four times with the Wolves winning three of the four contests. The Lakers have won 83 of the 122 matches played versus the Wolves all-time.
Los Angeles Lakers
Things are starting to get hot for the team in LA who extended their losing streak to four games in a row following their 110-99 defeat in Denver.
With the Kings and Magic also losing they remain the three winless teams while the Bucks are the lone unbeaten squad.
For those pointing at Russell Westbrook as the reason for the Lakers’ losses, they’ll have to find a new scapegoat after this most recent defeat especially since only three players scored in double-figures.
That included the expected combo of Anthony Davis who dropped a double-double of 22 points, and 14 rebounds plus five assists, three steals, and two blocks. LeBron James offered 19 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, and a steal.
Lonnie Walker IV was the only other double-figure contributor with 15 points.
Davis (back) and Westbrook (hamstring) are questionable for Friday. Cole Swider (foot) is out until late November while Thomas Bryant and Dennis Schroder are out indefinitely following thumb surgeries.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Wolves are still figuring out how to fully take advantage of their new asset Rudy Gobert. Certainly, he’s made a major impact defensively with the team boasting double-digit point differentials when he’s on the floor versus when he sits.
Karl-Anthony Towns is dealing with a drop in his statistics with the addition of Gobert. Specifically, his rebounds are down from 9.8 to 7.4 but he’s also witnessed a drop in points (24.6 down to 20.4) and his blocks are virtually wiped out (1.1 to 0.2).
While the rebounds and blocks make sense part of why KAT’s scoring is down is due to the team wanting to keep Gobert happy via involving him in the offense.
However, there’s been some friction between Towns and Anthony Edwards who is getting slightly more touches. Does KAT see Edwards is the future for Minny and feel threatened?
It’s worth keeping an eye on the situation and whether it disappears if the Wolves start winning or explodes if they face adversity.
Kyle Anderson (back) is questionable for Friday.

While the Wolves are favored and the Lakers have been terrible this isn’t a gimme for Minny. Although the Wolves are 3-2 those victories are against teams expected to be tanking (Thunder x2, Spurs) but even those wins didn’t come easy.
Minny lost double-digit leads in all their victories and had to battle to pull out the games versus the Thunder. That said, the Lakers are uber-small especially if Davis is out. BUT… if AD suits up I like the Lakers to keep this match close and possibly pull off the upset.
So, take the Lakers and the points but keep an eye on the injury report and go with the Wolves if AD is ruled out.
