As can be seen, the seventh-seeded Los Angeles Lakers and second-seeded Memphis Grizzlies begin their first-round playoff series on Sunday, April 16th.
LA got here by virtue of defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves in the seven-eight play-in game.
The Lakers are 40-41-2 overall against the spread this season. Also, they are 19-21-1 ATS as the away team. Another key point, the Grizzlies are 37-43-2 against the spread this season. Also, they are 23-17-1 ATS as the home team
LA won the regular season series with victories on February 28th match (121-109) and March 7th (112-103) while Memphis took the January 20th contest (122-121).
As a result, all-time the Lakers hold the advantage of winning 63 of 102 matches. Overall, last season the teams played four times with the Grizzlies taking three of the four contests.
This is the first time the clubs are facing each other in the postseason.
Los Angeles Lakers
Luck is always a part of a championship run and the Lakers have already benefitted by facing the Wolves without Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels.
In this series, they get another lucky matchup with the Grizzlies missing both Steven Adams and Brandon Clarke. That leaves the Grizzlies thin upfront and presents issues for dealing with Anthony Davis who has played great since returning from the break.
On the negative side, LA allows opponents to score an average of 116.6 points per game ranking 20th. Their opponents shoot 46.9% from the field and 34.4% from behind the arc ranking 10th and second respectively.
Another key point is the Lakers score 117.2 points per game which rank sixth-best while shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from the perimeter ranking 10th and 25th respectively.
To summarize the injury report…
- No injuries to report
Despite a season of adversity, the Grizzlies were able to regroup and retain the second overall seed in the West. Ja Morant dealt with off-court issues missing some time but it seemed to help the Grizzlies refocus and perhaps grow up a bit.
Injuries were the other major issue Memphis dealt with, first adjusting to the loss of Steven Adams and later Brandon Clarke. Their absences were going to be felt regardless of who they faced but having to game plan for Anthony Davis will put a ton of pressure on Jaren Jackson Jr.
Triple J played great down the stretch but has a tendency to get in early foul trouble and facing a media and league darling like the Lakers will undoubtedly mean he won’t be given the benefit of the doubt with the whistle.
Meanwhile, offensively, the Grizzlies score 116.9 points per game ranked ninth overall. Memphis shoot 47.5% from the field ranking 16th, and 35.1% from the perimeter ranking 23rd.
Memphis still owns the best opponent field goal percentage of 45.3% while limiting opponents to 113 points per game and 35.5% ranking 11th and ninth respectively.
To summarize the injury report…
- Steven Adams C (OUT indefinitely —PCL strain)
- Brandon Clarke PF (OUT for season—torn Achilles)

Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
Copious analysts are picking the Lakers to win which is somewhat fair given they have LeBron James and Anthony Davis to lead them and let’s be frank – – the whistle will favor them because sponsors want an LA team going deep.
Factoring in the two key injuries on Memphis also offers reason to give LA more of a chance.
That said, relying on the health of LeBron and AD is a risky endeavor at best with James not looking as mobile in that play-in game, and begs the question of how healthy his foot is.
Memphis also boasts the exciting Morant who can win games all by himself plus his bravado resonates throughout the roster.
If Desmond Bane and Luke Kennard get hot from the perimeter it’ll be a major x-factor for the Grizz who haven’t been a great 3-point shooting team overall and are facing the second-best perimeter defense.
I’m not sure Dillon Brooks’ comments about wanting to face LeBron were wise because it gives James ammunition and a desire to make him eat his words about sending LA home early.
Still, I’m more in favor (whistle notwithstanding) of the Grizzlies taking this series although I could see it going the distance.
