Wednesday, November 9th the Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers play the second of four scheduled matches this season. The Clippers won the initial meeting 103-97 and will host again on April 5th while the Lakers are the Crypto.com hosts on January 24th.
Both teams enter having last played Monday with the Clippers outlasting the Cavaliers in a 119-117 battle while the Lakers got absolutely routed 116-139 by the Jazz.
All-time the Lakers hold the advantage of winning 150 of 232 matches, however, the recent success lies with the Clippers who swept the four-game season series in 2021-22.
Los Angeles Lakers
LeBron James sat out his first game of this season on Monday with his club getting spanked by the Cinderella Jazz.
It wasn’t just a bad loss while missing their rapidly approaching 38-year-old best player. Nope, this game highlighted that even when the Lakers break through offensively there are grander issues in areas Darvin Ham thought were set in stone.
Namely – their defense and how much closer it is to smoke and mirrors than reality. Not just because they couldn’t stop the Jazz – heck they’ve proven difficult for the majority of teams to deal with.
But only two teams have allowed Utah to score 130 points and the Lakers just did it twice in four days! (The Wolves were the other team and required overtime)!
Less than a week ago the Lakers ranked 11th for opponent scoring but dropped all the way down to 24th as their foes are now averaging 116.3 points per game.
Although LA’s opponent efficiency ranks in the middle of the league they ranked sixth last week, both for field goal percentage and from the perimeter, slipping to 14th (46.3%) and 11th (34.6%) in just a few games.
Similarly, their offense doesn’t look quite as bad (on paper) as it did a week or so ago because they benefitted from two 120-point victories and scoring 116 twice against the Jazz.
Those performances leapfrogged LA from 30th in scoring per game to 26th (108.4) but still can’t hide their 30th-ranked perimeter efficiency (29.1%)
James (foot) and Patrick Beverley (illness) were upgraded to probable while Lonnie Walker IV (illness) is questionable for Wednesday. Dennis Schroder (thumb) and Thomas Bryant (thumb) are still out.
LA Clippers
While the Clippers moved above .500 again their record doesn’t accurately showcase the struggles of the early season.
Granted the win versus the Cavaliers was impressive but when you dive deeper into Cleveland’s record other than their two overtime wins versus the Celtics the other six teams they beat have a combined 23-42 record.
In the same vein, aside from the victory versus the Cavs the other five teams the Clippers collected wins against have a cumulative record of 14-38.
To be fair, they’ve been equal opportunity losers – coughing up two games to the Thunder and another to the Jazz although the latter has played well so far.
That said, LA’s stats particularly on defense are strong as showcased versus the Cavaliers, and should carry them while they search for the offense to gel.
To wit, opponents score the seventh fewest points per game (107.5) and they hold them to 44.6 percent from the field and 34.3 percent from the perimeter which ranks fifth and tied for eighth.
Punctuating their struggles on offense, despite dropping 119 points on Monday, the Clippers still rank dead last for scoring with an average of 103.8 points per game and rank 25th for perimeter field goal percentage (33.3%).
They rank a more respectable ninth for field goal percentage shooting 47.4 percent.
Kawhi Leonard (knee) remains out with no indication of his return date.

Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. LA Clippers NBA Prediction:
As the last point highlights the Clippers have a recency bias for wins having taken care of their Crypto.com roommates in five of the last six games.
If I was only basing decisions on what the stats say and hadn’t watched these teams play there would be little to separate these two clubs.
But the reality is one team has a legitimate chance of ascending the ladder into firm playoff berth territory and the other will fairly provide sports show fodder for the remainder of the season!
