It’s desperation time for the defending NBA Champions as the Golden State Warriors return home in win-or-go-home mode after the Los Angeles Lakers took a 3-1 stranglehold on the series following a 104-101 nail-biter on Monday.
Historically, 277 teams have held a 3-1 lead with a 95 percent (264 teams) win percentage while 13 teams comprise the five percent who battled back to win the series.
In the Steve Kerr era, the Warriors suffered a 1-3 series deficit twice — first in 2016 when they added their names to the above list of 13 teams digging their way back against Kevin Durant’s Thunder and in 2019 when they lost in the Finals to the Raptors.
At this time, the Lakers are 46-44-2 overall against the spread this season. Also, they are 21-24-1 ATS as the away team. Overall, the Warriors are 43-48-1 against the spread this season. Also, they are 29-16-1 ATS as the home team
The Lakers won the season series 3-1 with victories on February 11th (109-103), 23rd (124-111), and March 5th (113-105) while the Warriors took the initial meeting on October 18th (123-109).
This is the seventh time the teams are meeting in the postseason with LA holding the 6-1 advantage although they haven’t faced each other since 1991.
Los Angeles Lakers
Close-out games are the hardest to win but something the Lakers have going for them is LeBron James while consistently producing has yet to have a overwhelmingly dominant performance as he’s done so many times in the past.
While James led the Lakers scoring (27 points) in Game 4, Lonnie Walker IV’s fourth-quarter scoring outburst and Anthony Davis’ defense played a critical role.
It was also the first time AD delivered back-to-back offensive games registering a double-double of 23 points and 15 rebounds while five Lakers scored in double-digits.
On the negative side, LA allows opponents to score an average of 116.6 points per game ranking 20th. Their opponents shoot 46.9% from the field and 34.4% from behind the arc ranking 10th and second respectively.
Another key point is the Lakers score 117.2 points per game which rank sixth-best while shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from the perimeter ranking 10th and 25th respectively.
To summarize the injury report…
- Bam Adebayo C (downgraded to OUT —ankle)
Golden State Warriors
Of course, the irony of this series is two of the three Warriors losses in this series could just as easily be victories and came down to clutch time.
Equally surprising is while LA’s two superstars have done their part it’s been the LA reserves in Games 1 and 3 who stepped up to be the x-factor and make the difference.
Steve Kerr made tweaks to the starting lineup again in Game 4 inserting Gary Payton II so the Warriors would have three guards on the floor to pull Davis out of the paint.
The scheme was working but it also meant Steph Curry was tasked with the majority of the playmaking capitalizing on pick and roll sets. Curry registered a triple-double of 31 points, 10 rebounds, and 14 assists plus three steals.
However, he needed more help from his teammates as Andrew Wiggins (17), Payton (15), and Donte DiVincenzo (10) were the only other Warriors to score in double-figures.
Comparatively, Golden State averages 118.9 points per game ranking second overall while shooting 47.9% from the field and 38.5% from deep ranking 12th and second respectively.
Warriors opponents score 117.6 points ranking 21st with them shooting 47.1% from the field and 36.6% from deep ranking ninth and 18th respectively.
To summarize the injury report…
- Andre Iguodala, SF (OUT til late April —wrist)
- Ryan Rollins, SG (OUT indefinitely—foot)
- Patrick Baldwin Jr. SF (doubtful—toe)

Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Prediction:
I’ll admit the Lakers have surprised me in this series. It’s not that I wasn’t aware of their defensive prowess or Davis’ ability. Rather, AD’s history of getting hurt or being inconsistent loomed. Plus the fact different reserves have been such major x-factors.
In contrast, Klay Thompson’s 15 and nine points in the LA games while shooting 32% from the field has hurt but there is a significantly bigger issue — the disappearing act of Jordan Poole.
Since his ill advised 28 foot 3-pointer in Game 1 when he scored 21 points Poole has regressed in each subsequent match scoring six, five and zero points the last three games.
Kerr was forced to bench him in Game 4 which prompted a pouting Poole to imply this was tied more to his playing time.
If Poole isn’t willing to take accountability Kerr may need to rely more on Moses Moody, Payton, and DiVincenzo since he doesn’t have to question their desire.
I’ll concede it’s unlikely LeBron and AD will lose three games in a row, however, there is a strong motivating factor with five players (Steph, Klay, Draymond, Looney and Iggy) who were on the 73-9 team who lost a 3-1 series lead in the Finals to LeBron and the Cavs.
No doubt, that will be used for chalkboard material and while I have my doubts Golden State can become the 14th team to come back from 1-3, I do think the series returns to LA with the above core (minus Iggy) collectively having their best game of this series.
