Tuesday, October 18th, finds the Los Angeles Lakers playing the Golden State Warriors on opening night in the marquee match of the night with ring night taking center stage.
Last season the Pacific Division rivals met four times with the Warriors winning the season series 3-1 including their final meeting (128-112) on April 7th, 2022.
The Lakers only preseason victory (1-5) occurred against the Warriors (124-121) with losses to the Suns and twice each to the Kings and Timberwolves. Golden State played five matches (3-2) defeating the Wizards twice and Blazers while posting losses to the Lakers and Nuggets.
The Lakers have won 257 of the 429 matches played versus the Warriors all-time.
Los Angeles Lakers
Darvin Ham takes over the Head Coach position and seems intent on establishing a standard from the jump. He’s toying with the concept of bringing Russell Westbrook off the bench and playing Anthony Davis at the center position.
Although Ham’s intentions are clear neither Westbrook nor Davis are thrilled with their potential roles albeit neither was overtly critical of the concept.
Rather, AD stated he preferred to play at the four but would do what was best for the team while Westbrook’s actions were more telling than his words.

Despite Ham’s strong direction this Lakers club sure doesn’t look like title contenders. Granted LeBron James can change the conversation but he still needs a supporting cast and ideally one that is loaded with perimeter shooting and defensive prowess.
Davis claimed he intended on playing all 82 games which is a bit baffling considering he’s never done that in his career and played only 36 and 40 games in the last two campaigns.
The fact he missed two preseason games with a stiff back sort of hinted he might be gaslighting fans. He’s healthy for the opener but there are other issues with Westbrook (hamstring), Dennis Schroder (thumb) questionable, and Troy Brown Jr. (back) out.
Kendrick Nunn and Austin Reed will need to produce for this club to be competitive and both offered positive results in preseason play but the lack of depth and continued defensive weaknesses will be a problem.
LA is still shopping Westbrook but given his contract, it’s hard to imagine getting the necessary return to propel LA into contender status even if they were able to steal Buddy Hield and Myles Turner from the Pacers for the enigmatic guard and copious draft picks/swaps to sweeten the pot.
Golden State Warriors
Draymond Green should be thanking his lucky stars it’s ring night or his altercation with Jordan Poole may have resulted in suspension.
Instead, he spent some time away from the team and paid a fine but was back with the team for their final preseason game, and seemingly the club has moved on from the incident.
The Dubs are the current envy of their opponents making six Finals appearances in the last eight seasons with four titles to show for their efforts. Repeating is never an easy challenge but the Warriors cast is seemingly stronger than the one who hoisted Larry O’B in June.
Gary Payton II (Blazers), Otto Porter (Raptors) and Juan Toscano (Lakers) with JaMychal Green the only significant addition. However, the core is back with a healthier Klay Thompson and a group of youngsters ready to accept a bigger role.
Specifically, Jordan Poole, Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, and James Wisemen will be featured more as Steve Kerr looks to keep his core vets rested and healthy for the playoffs.
All four youngsters served up positive performances in the preseason, especially Wisemen who missed the entirety of 2022.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Lakers were 18-23 against the spread in 2021-22 road games
- The Warriors were 32-19-2 against the spread in 2021-22 home games
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of the Lakers’s last 5 games on the road
- Golden State is 13-1 SU in its last 14 games at home
Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Prediction:
Two Warriors will suit up with extra incentives as Poole ($140/4yerars) and Andrew Wiggins ($108M/4-years) locked up their extensions to remain with the team for the foreseeable future.
Although the emotion and drama of ring night can end up playing havoc with focus the Dubs have been here before (2-1) and are adept on both sides of the hardcourt.
With so much depth and a motivated core group, I like Curry to lead his squad to victory and also cover the spread.
