Wednesday, October 26th finds the Los Angeles Lakers playing the Denver Nuggets for the first or two meetings this week (Sunday).
Both teams last played Portland who faced the two clubs in a back-to-back scenario with LA coughing up a double-digit lead in their 104-106 loss Sunday while the rested Nuggets got routed Monday 110-135.
LA is one of four winless teams (Magic, Kings, Thunder) entering week two of play with an upcoming schedule that suddenly looks more dangerous – like playing the Jazz twice in the next seven games while they’re hot and seemingly ignoring tanking.
The Lakers hold the all-time record having bested the Nuggets in 111 of their 185 meetings. Last season the squads played three times with the Nuggets winning two of the three contests.
Los Angeles Lakers
Remarkably, this Lakers squad which is dreadful offensively ranks second defensively. The problem is they can’t score and their personnel doesn’t fit each other.
Even casual fans know LeBron James’ best lineups feature stellar defenders and copious perimeter shooters. And while it’s only a week into the season, the struggles from the perimeter date back to last year, and the player additions haven’t corrected that problem.
Case in point, LeBron’s former team the Cavaliers rank first from deep shooting 44.3% whereas the Lakers rank dead last shooting an abysmal 21.2 percent (YIKES).
Two players (Matt Ryan, Max Christie) are the only Lakers shooting better than 28.6 percent and even that’s deceiving because they’ve combined to attempt six 3-pointers in total.
Westbrook (hamstring) is doubtful for Wednesday while Anthony Davis (back) and LeBron James (foot) are both probable.
Cole Swider (foot) is out until late November while Thomas Bryant and Dennis Schroder are out indefinitely following thumb surgeries.
Denver Nuggets
Unlike the Lakers, the Nuggets are feasting from deep shooting 41.6 percent. It’s hard to fathom Denver who has seven players shooting 40 percent or better is attempting eight fewer 3-ball shots (31.3 attempts) per game than the Lakers!
And while the Nuggets’ recent loss wasn’t ideal, they were playing their third game in four nights. Still, watching the Nuggets play there is far more confidence in this squad rising to a home-court seed.
Michael Malone will slowly increase Jamal Murray’s minutes as he regains his rhythm. Even with him slowly being integrated and attempting just 12.3 shots per game there is a palpable joy from his teammates to see him back on the hardwood.
A bit of a concern is news Michael Porter Jr. is questionable for Wednesday with his back listed as the reason, but this might be load management.
Jeff Green (finger) is probable. Collin Gillespie (leg) is out indefinitely.
