Monday, March 21st the Los Angeles Lakers face the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second and final time this season. The Lakers won the initial meeting 113-101 on October 29th.
Both teams last played on Saturday with the Lakers unable to follow up their victory on Friday with a 119-127 loss to the Wizards while the Cavaliers 113-109 victory versus the Pelicans.
All-time the Lakers have the advantage of winning 67 of 118 matches versus the Cavaliers. Last season the teams played twice with the Lakers sweeping the regular-season series.
Los Angeles Lakers
Many thought LeBron James would rest on Saturday and wait for this match back in his home city to surpass Karl Malone for second on the all-time scoring list.
Instead, and despite nursing a sore knee he played versus the Wizards and entered the history books early in the match en route to his 38 point evening. James collected a double-double adding 10 rebounds along with six assists.
Russell Westbrook had another efficient match with 22 points on 10 of 15 from the field and was two assists shy of a triple-double (10 rebounds, eight assists) in front of the fans he played for last season.
The role players who were hitting shots in Toronto weren’t as effective as the overtime likely took a lot out of them although the trio of Malik Monk (17), Carmelo Anthony (13), and Stanley Johnson (12) did score in double-digits.
LeBron James (knee) and Wayne Ellington (illness) are questionable while Anthony Davis (ankle), and Kendrick Nunn (knee) are both out indefinitely.
Cleveland Cavaliers
That heat the Cavaliers feel on their back is the Raptors breathing on them as they’ve cut the lead between the teams to a single game. Of the two teams, the Cavaliers are struggling more to get wins although they had a strong weekend featuring a sweep of their back-to-back set.
First, they erased a double-digit deficit to push the Nuggets into overtime on Friday where they prevailed for the win and then held on to defeat the scrappy Pistons on Saturday.
The two players carrying the load while Jarret Allen is out are Darius Garland and rookie Evan Mobley with both registering double-doubles in the win versus Detroit. Garland registered 24 points and 12 rebounds while Mobley posted 12 points and 11 rebounds plus six assists.
Cedi Osman (16), Lamar Stevens (15), Kevin Love (14), and Isaac Okoro (11) were the other double-digit contributors.
Rajon Rondo (ankle) and Dean Wade (knee) were downgraded to out Monday while Jarrett Allen (finger) is out indefinitely. Collin Sexton (knee) is out for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Lakers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Cavaliers are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of the Lakers’ last 7 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 6 of Cleveland’s last 7 games.
- Over is 5-2 in the Lakers’ last 7 overall.
- Over is 4-0 in the Cavaliers’ last 4 home games.
Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction
While the Lakers are 1-12 in their last 13 games on the road, James gets up to play at home but the Lakers will have a major issue specifically with limiting the Cavaliers’ paint scoring.
LA ranks 28th for opponent scoring in the paint while the Cavaliers score the 10th most points in the paint. Toronto who ranks 16th scored 62 paint points on LA Friday so protecting the paint is key for LA.
Granted, the Cavaliers aren’t quite as lethal without Allen but Mobley is trying to make up for the center’s absence. Lauri Markkanen has played his best stretch of ball recently although he had a rough shooting night on Saturday.
Both teams were struggling prior to the weekend and each collected big overtime wins but Cleveland has been the more consistent squad. That said, I like LA to keep it closer than the six-point spread.
