Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers defeated Orlando, which, as it stands, is a playoff team out East, 122–95, on Thursday after blowing-out the Cavaliers by twenty-five earlier in the week.
Kawhi Leonard scored thirty-two points to lead all scorers; Montrezl Harrell had twenty-one in twenty-three minutes off the bench; and JaMychal Green had a double-double with eleven points and thirteen rebounds.

Paul George did not play for a fourth game in a row due to a balky hamstring. A clear timetable hasn’t been announced detailing his return but the Clippers don’t seem concerned; nor should they be. Thursday’s victory was their forty-second game of the season, marking the start of the second half of their regular season schedule.
Talk is that the Clippers have the most flexibility to make an improvement to their roster mid-season and that they may be looking to make an offensive upgrade over Maurice Harkless, who has had to play perhaps more than Doc Rivers would like with George in and out of the lineup all season.
The offense ranks fifth in the NBA, in terms of points per possession, though. The defense is seventh. And those numbers include a lot of games without George and/or Leonard, who have only played fifty-eight of a possible eighty-four games.
New Orleans Pelicans
New Orleans began the season 6–22 but its on a 9–3 run over its last twelve games, including Thursday night’s 138–132 overtime victory over Utah.
The Jazz came into the game winners of ten in a row, fifteen of its last sixteen, and tied with Denver for second place in the Western Conference standings.
After missing the previous game to injury, Brandon Ingram scored a career-high forty-nine points. Derrick Favors, who had missed the last two games, returned with a double-double of twenty-one points and eleven rebounds. Jrue Holiday and JJ Reddick both sat out, however, their sixth and third games in a row, respectively.
Both Holiday and Reddick should be back soon and it was announced the other day that Zion Williamson will debut on the 22nd, at home, against the San Antonio Spurs.
The timing could hardly be better with New Orleans starting to play better. Were Williamson to return with the Pels struggling, he would feel more pressure to lift his team; now he should be able to just fit in.
Flawed as his shooting stroke may be, Williamson should certainly be able to simply fit in and use his strengths: rebounding, running the floor, finishing at the rim and defending. Every team could use more of that and he will give the Pelicans a jolt of energy with the team already playing so well.
But that’s looking ahead. The Pelicans have been able to play so well without Holiday and Reddick and Favors and, even for the one game, Ingram because Lonzo Ball is playing better basketball at the point guard spot (you’ve been warned more than once not to give up on Ball continuing to improve late into his professional career) and a trio of guards have been scoring the ball.
E’Twaun Moore, now an NBA veteran out of Purdue, Frank Jackson and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, two young men out of the Atlantic Coast Conference have all been dependable scorers with the Pelicans shorthanded. Finding a way to continue to get productivity out of them with the return of so many established names will be key to New Orleans’ sustained success.
