Los Angeles Clippers

As of Sunday morning, the Clippers are your 8-seed out West, four wins and two losses better than the Sacramento Kings with the Lakers plummeting off the pace.

The Clips just beat the Kings on Friday night, the last time they were in action. The rookie out of Wichita State, Landry Shamet, led seven double-digits scorers with 20 and Ivica Zubac had a double-double in just 18 minutes on the floor.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Patrick Beverly did nice defensive work on the Kings’ backcourt. DeAaron Fox and Buddy Hield scored just 35 points between the two of them and the game was in Sacramento.

According to FiveThirtyEight’s NBA prediction model, the Clippers are going to win this race with Sacramento and the Lakers rather easily. It projects the Clips to win 44 games, compared to just 39 for both the Kings and Lakers.

Getting back into the playoffs would be a step in the right direction for the Clippers, who have a great chance to improve themselves in free agency, not to mention the addition draft picks and youth that came in for Tobias Harris.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers blew a fourth quarter lead on Friday night, at home, against Milwaukee and Luke Walton played Rajon Rondo 40 minutes, LeBron James 39 minutes, Brandon Ingram 39 minutes, and Kyle Kuzma 34 minutes.

It turned out to be a double whammy, as the Lakers lost again the very next night in Phoenix. A late comeback attempt wasn’t enough to overcome LA’s flat start and the Suns won for just the 13th time this season, 118–109.

LeBron played another 41 minutes and had 27 points, 16 rebounds and nine assists; Brandon Ingram scored 25 in 39 minutes; and JaVale McGee scored 21 in just 25 minutes. Other than that, it was a lackluster performance from the rest of the Lakers. DeAndre Ayton and Devin Booker combined to get 51 for Phoenix.

This will be the first season since 2007-2008 that a LeBron James-led team won’t win 50 games (curtesy of Reddit). The Lakers are in danger of worse than just failing to win 50, though.

It may be the first time LeBron misses the playoffs since 2004-2005, his second year in the league, and, given the way they are playing, the Lakers may not even surpass last year’s 35 wins.

There are few easy wins left on the schedule. The next three at home certainly aren’t gimme’s: Clippers, Nuggets, Celtics.
