Wednesday, November 2nd, the LA Clippers and Houston Rockets complete their home and home series in Houston. The Clippers hung on to capture the 95-93 win on Monday.
The teams will play twice more this season with Houston hosting on November 14th and LA on January 15th.
All-time the Rockets have the advantage of winning 124 of 210 matches versus LA. Last season the teams met three times with the Clippers sweeping the series.
LA Clippers
While the Clippers haven’t gotten out to the start they wanted their defense is among the best through two weeks of play. Specifically, they hold opponents to 107.0 points per 100 possessions which ranks 5th.
From an efficiency perspective, their opponents aren’t faring much better as they shoot 43.3 percent from the field and 33.3% percent from the perimeter both of which rank fourth.
The issue is their offense and punctuating that fact is while the league is scoring at a higher clip than ever the Clippers are averaging just 99.9 points per 100 possessions which of course ranks dead last. And this from the club considered the deepest in the association – it’s sort of unfathomable.
They’re shooting 45.8 percent from the field (20th) and an atrocious (for them) 30.4% from the perimeter which ranks 28th. It might just be rust because the Clippers were one of the better perimeter shooting teams last season when they ranked third.
But watching the team this season the offense simply looks stilted with them going through stagnate segments in every game, even when Leonard plays.
Speaking of Leonard he’s listed as questionable for Wednesday… again, the question is how serious is the situation with his knee? Lots of players return from long absences and are load managed but this seems like something more.
John Wall (knee/rest) and Robert Covington (quarantine) are also questionable.
Houston Rockets
Preseason analysts projected how the lower tier of teams would fare with some interesting takeaways. Seven teams typically were cited as guaranteed to be tanking including the Thunder, Jazz, Spurs, Pacers, Pistons, Magic and Rockets.
Analysts suggested the Spurs would record the fewest wins ever, the Jazz and Pacers would dismantle their teams prior to season start for more draft picks, while the Pistons, Magic and Rockets would improve and briefly vie for a play-in seed.
Flash forward to the start of week three with the Spurs and Jazz playing better than some of the teams tapped to be title contenders, while the Thunder and Pacers have more wins than the Heat, Nets and both LA teams.
The Rockets however, haven’t taken that step and in fact play like the youthful squad they are.
Houston allows 116.5 points per 100 possessions ranking 21st and opponents are shooting 48.8 percent from the field (29th) and 35.0 percent from the perimeter (17th).
Offensively the Rockets score 107.8 points per 100 possessions (27th) while they shoot 41.8% from the field which ranks dead last and 34% from deep (22nd).
Jae’Sean Tate (ankle) is questionable for Wednesday. TyTy Washington (knee) and Bruno Fernando (knee) are out indefinitely.

Free LA Clippers vs. Houston Rockets NBA Prediction:
Realistically, the Clippers should win this game easily and cover, but the team hasn’t come close to resembling the scrappy squad who compiled wins with both their superstars out last season.
Maybe it’s just far too early to be worrying — but something has to give soon, especially since this is the second most expensive roster in the association.
Normally, I’d be all over the Clippers winning and covering but since neither team is excelling at putting points on the board I’ll take the Rockets and the points.
