Saturday, October 22nd, Pacific Division rivals the LA Clippers vs. Sacramento Kings play for the first time this season.
The Clippers opened their season on Thursday defeating fellow Crypto.com Arena residents the Lakers (103-97) while the Kings lost a dogfight to the Blazers on Wednesday (108-115).
The teams will play each other four times with Sacramento also hosting on March 3rd, while the Clippers will host the Kings on December 3rd, and February 24th.
Last season, the squads played four times splitting the season series. The Kings hold the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 119 of their 221 matches.
LA Clippers
In their season debut, the Clippers welcomed Kawhi Leonard and John Wall back to the hardcourt. Both entered the game as reserves and both scored on their first shots.
Leonard offered 14 points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes while Wall registered 15 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Paul George delivered a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds plus four assists.
The Clippers showcased why analysts consider them title favorites given their depth with six players scoring in double-figures and several others capable of matching that output.
Ty Lue’s biggest issue is going to be finding minutes and touches for everyone while maintaining a positive atmosphere where players don’t get annoyed by their lack of either.
The one player to keep an eye on is Reggie Jackson who seemed to be hunting (and forcing) his own shot and subsequently, Lue went with Wall in clutch time.
Sacramento Kings
The opening game for the Kings was a back-and-forth affair that could’ve gone either way although a referee made clutch time more about himself than the game.
The latter occurred when Terence Davis put the Kings ahead on a put-back dunk but was immediately given a tech for celebrating. There were other games as well where benches were given warnings and/or techs for cheering while other bench units or players celebrating were completely ignored.
In fact, in the battle of LA – the Clippers bench was warned to stay seated while the Lakers were afforded the right to jump up and down and scream on their sideline.
If the team is standing while a player is shooting it’s understandable to warn the benches but to remove the ability of a visiting bench to cheer on their team is ridiculous.
In this case, that one call against Davis sucked all the momentum away from the Kings and ultimately cost them the victory.
De’Aaron Fox led the way for his club with 33 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and two steals. In his debut with Sacramento, Kevin Huerter offered 22 including six of nine from deep.
Domantas Sabonis had a rather quiet night by his standards registering 13 points, four rebounds, and five assists. Davis scored 14 as the only other Kings player to offer double-digit scoring.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Clippers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
- The Kings are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games.
- Under is 4-1 in the Clippers’ last 5 overall.
- Over is 4-1 in the Kings’ last 5 games playing on 2 days’ rest.
- The Clippers are 6-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings in Sacramento.
LA Clippers vs. Sacramento Kings NBA Analysis:
Although the Clippers won their opening match there are clearly some kinks to iron out as the team’s offensive chemistry has a ways to go. In contrast, the Kings’ offense looked smoother in their debut despite the loss.
This won’t be a gimme for the Clippers and they might not be feeling the pressure given their upcoming schedule features 10 out of 16 teams more likely to be tanking than competing for playoff berths.
In contrast, eight of the next 11 matches for the Kings feature playoff teams (plus the Lakers) which only adds to the anxiety of logging that first victory of the season.
The oddsmakers might be on the same train of thought since the spread opened at 6 for the Clippers but has dropped to 4.5. I don’t know if the Kings get the ‘W’ but I like them to cover either way.
