Friday, February 25th finds the LA Clippers facing the Los Angeles Lakers for the third of four scheduled meetings this season. The Clippers took both prior meetings on December 3rd (119-115) and February 3rd (111-110).
Both teams played on Thursday (February 16th) before the break with the Clippers pounding the Rockets 142-111 while the Lakers ended a three-game losing streak with a 106-101 victory versus the Jazz
All-time the Lakers hold the advantage winning 150 of 229 matches. Last season the teams played three times with the Clippers sweeping the season series.
LA Clippers
Although the Clippers haven’t had Kawhi Leonard all season and Paul George for the majority of games they’ve been scrappy and competitive holding onto the eighth seed.
That their fellow Crypto.com residents have struggled so mightily and rank behind them on the playoff ladder is a testament to the depth of the Clippers and coach Ty Lue’s ability to get his team to compete.
Perhaps the more obvious takeaway is the Clippers have an identity, everyone accepts their role and are willing to do the dirty work without the concern of personal stats.
Their stretch run features the 18th ranked strength of schedule with the fewest games left to play in the Association (21) with 11 road games and 10 home games.
Coming back from the break eight of their first nine games are against teams ranked ninth or lower followed by nine of their next 10 against top eight seeds.
Norman Powell (toe), Jason Preston (foot), Paul George (elbow), and Kawhi Leonard (knee) are all out indefinitely. Jay Scrubb (toe) is lost for the season.
Los Angeles Lakers
With Anthony Davis expected to miss at least a month the Lakers are in tough with the third most difficult strength of schedule to close the season.
Of their 24 matches left to play 14 are on the road an area where LA struggles (9-18) and 16 are against teams seeded eighth or higher.
Three of the eight matches they’ll play against teams ranked ninth or lower occur in the second week of March but for the most part, it’s constant games against tough opposition.
And the schedule gets tougher after March 11th with all but four of their final 16 games against top-eight seeds and three of the other four against the Pelicans (twice) and Wizards who are trying to get into the play-in tournament.
LeBron James (knee) is questionable, Carmelo Anthony (hamstring) was upgraded to probable while Avery Bradley (knee) was downgraded to out for Friday. Davis (ankle), and Kendrick Nunn (knee) are all out indefinitely.

Although Leonard and Paul have missed matches it hasn’t mattered – – since they joined the Clippers their club is 7-2 against the Lakers. Perhaps it’s the battle of LA supremacy or the angst of living in a city where the Lakeshow gets all the hype.
Regardless of the true motivation they just seem to have the Lakers’ number and without Davis available, the odds only improve for Lue’s squad.
I have no idea why the Lakers are favored – – well that’s not completely true (injuries) but given the recent history and Lakers struggles I like the Clippers (and would’ve even if the spread was on the reverse side).
