Monday, March 14th the LA Clippers face the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second and final meeting this season. Cleveland won the initial October 27th match (92-79).
The Clippers are playing back-to-back, defeating the Pistons 106-102 on Sunday while the Cavaliers played Saturday losing 91-101 to the Bulls.
All-time the Cavaliers have the advantage of winning 75 of 133 matches versus the Clippers. Last season the teams played twice with the Clippers winning both contests.
LA Clippers
Without their two superstars, the Clippers continue to hold onto the seventh seed but find themselves stuck in that position. That’s because the Timberwolves are playing their best ball leading to a 3.5 game edge.
While the Clippers are 7-3 in their last 10 games, Minny is 8-2 so the Clippers haven’t been able to make up any ground on the Wolves.
Conversely, they also don’t seem in danger of falling any further down the ladder because the eighth seed is the Lakers who trail them by 5.5 games and are 3-7 through their last 10 matches.
Ironically, the teams with the hardest strength of schedules to finish the season are the Clippers and Lakers.
Certainly, the Clips could go on a losing streak but they’ve managed to keep losing to no more than three games in a row whereas the Lakers have suffered five and four game losing streaks and the last time they won two games in a row was January 7th.
Factor in the whispers of the possibility for Kawhi Leonard and Paul George to return this season or at some point in the postseason. That’s a frightening prospect for the Suns and whoever finishes second since they might have to play a fully healthy Clippers squad in round one.
Robert Covington (personal) is day-to-day. Leonard (knee), George (elbow), Norman Powell (toe), and Jason Preston (foot) are out indefinitely. Jay Scrubb (toe) is out for the season.
Cleveland Cavaliers
While it’s not exactly free fall the Cavaliers are struggling losing games to teams they were beating earlier in the season. Part of the reason is they’re missing Jarrett Allen, but the losing began even before his absence.
They’ve lost eight of 11 matches punctuating their struggle to close the season. They got the critical victory versus the Raptors, losing Allen in the process but Toronto was missing Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby, and Malachi Flynn.
That put them 3.0 games up on Toronto but much has changed since that match. Cleveland beat the Pacers but lost to the Heat and Bulls. In contrast, the Raptors have won three in a row including a back-to-back set versus the Suns and Nuggets (on the road).
The resulting effect is Toronto is only 1.0 game back now with this week being critical.
Both teams play four matches this week with Cleveland hosting the Clippers, 76ers, Nuggets, and Pistons (the latter two in a back-to-back). Toronto faces the Lakers (home/home), Clippers, and 76ers.
Suffice to say, it won’t be surprising if Toronto is sitting sixth by week’s end.
Help may be coming as Caris LeVert (foot) is listed as questionable but so are Lauri Markkanen (ankle) and Dean Wade (knee) while Allen is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Clippers are 8-2 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Clippers are 8-2 ATS in the last 10 matches against the Grizzlies
- The over/under is 4-5-1 in the teams’ last 10 head to head matches
- Cavaliers are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
- Clippers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games as an underdog.
- Cavaliers are 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
- Clippers are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games overall.
Free LA Clippers vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction
Cleveland has the rest advantage and the Clippers are 4-7 in second games of back-to-back sets but those wins are all in the latter portion of the season.
If Cleveland gets back LeVert that’s huge for the offense that is struggling to put points on the board. However, they could be taking one step forward and two back if they lose both Markkanen and Wade.
Assuming that trio all plays I like Cleveland to win but in a close battle and if that trio is out then switch to the Clippers winning. Either way, I like the points and LA..
