Friday, March 11th, finds the LA Clippers facing the Atlanta Hawks for the second and final time this season. LA won the initial meeting 106-93 on January 9th.
Both teams last played on Wednesday with the Clippers beating the Wizards 115-109 while the Hawks lost 115-124 to the Bucks. These teams are both vying to move up the ladder currently residing in play-in seeds with Atlanta in 10th and LA eighth.
Last season, the teams played twice splitting the season series with each team winning on their home court. The Hawks hold the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 79 of their 127 matches.
LA Clippers
Sitting eighth the Clippers don’t have much hope of climbing to sixth to avoid the play-in because they trail the sixth-place Nuggets by six games.
Minnesota isn’t doing them any favors either with the Wolves on a current six-game win streak making it impossible to reduce the 3.5 game lead they hold over the Clippers.
The Wednesday victory did help them build a bigger pad over the Lakers who lost to the Rockets on Wednesday and the combination of those factors finds the Clippers up 5.5 games on the Krypto.com neighbors.
They are still within striking distance of the Wolves 3.5 games back although that might not matter especially if the rumors of Paul George and/or Kawhi Leonard possibly returning are true.
In the victory versus the Wizards, Reggie Jackson (31 points, seven assists) and Marcus Morris Sr. (27 points, eight rebounds) led the way. Luke Kennard (17) and Ivica Zubac (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Robert Covington (personal) is questionable. Norman Powell (foot), Jason Preston (foot), George (elbow), and Leonard (knee) are out indefinitely. Jay Scrubb (toe) is lost for the season.
Atlanta Hawks
Tensions ran high in the Hawks’ loss to the Bucks with head coach Nate McMillan ending up getting ejected when he erupted over DeAndre Hunter being called for an offensive foul for pushing off Khris Middleton.
McMillan made the point Giannis Antetokounmpo had committed precisely the same actions several times without being called. Sometimes coaches purposely get ejected to spark them into playing more aggressively but McMillan’s exit didn’t serve that purpose.
Instead, the technical fouls and free throws only served to give the Bucks the edge they needed to put the game away.
As for the Hawks, Trae Young led the way with a double-double of 27 points and 11 assists while De’Andre Hunter scored 17 points.
John Collins struggled in his third game back from the foot injury with just two points and five rebounds. Kevin Huerter was also back in the rotation after missing the prior game and delivered 16 points.
The trio of Danilo Gallinari (14), Onyeka Okongwu (13), and Clint Capela (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Statistically, the teams delivered extremely similar both shooting 50 percent from the field. Milwaukee took only one additional free throw and made one more 3-pointer.
The main differences occurred on the glass and in the paint with the Bucks grabbing six additional boards and besting Atlanta 62 to 46 in the paint.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Atlanta is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- LA is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games.
- Atlanta is 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games against a Western Conference opponent
- The total has gone UNDER in 6 of the Clippers’ last 6 games on the road.
Free LA Clippers vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
The Hawks are in a more precarious situation because neither the Wizards nor Knicks have thrown in the towel and trail Atlanta by 1.5 and 3.5 games respectively with New York on a three-game winning streak.
They also face many of the more desperate teams in their stretch run with seven of their 16 matches against teams either currently seeded in the play-in or vying to be including the Wizards, Knicks, Hornets, Nets, and Raptors.
That makes this game more vital for Atlanta but the issue as it’s been all season is whether they can deliver on the defensive side of the court and I’m not confident they can.
