Saturday, March 12th, the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs play for the second and final time this season. The Raptors won the initial match 129-104 in Toronto on January 4th.
While many teams in the association are mired in schedule hell playing copious back-to-back sets or three games in four days the Pacers got a schedule gift having been off since Tuesday in a 124-127 loss to the Cavaliers.
The Spurs played Friday in what became a historic night, winning a 104-102 nailbiter versus the Jazz.
Last season the clubs played twice with the teams splitting the games each winning on the road. The Spurs hold the all-time record with 55 wins in 97 matches versus the Pacers.
Indiana Pacers
The learning curve continues with Indiana as they were poised to win the match versus the Cavaliers but Jalen Smith made an error fouling unnecessarily and it cost the Pacers the game.
Indy led by double-digits (10) but couldn’t hold on in a game that witnessed several lead changes. The Pacers struggled in several areas allowing Cleveland to score 70 (to 52) paint points plus win the fast break scoring (24 to 14),
They turned over the ball 18 times which the Cavs converted to 23 points (vs. eight times for four points) and Cleveland got to the line 27 times compared to 15 for Indy.
Those four areas equated to an extra Cavaliers having a benefit of 61 points but somehow the Pacers only lost by three points which was primarily made up from the perimeter with Indy hitting 16 of their 32 deep balls compared to nine for the Cavs and strong shooting overall.
Tyrese Haliburton led the team with 25 points and nine rebounds while Malcolm Brogdon delivered a double-double of 12 points and 12 assists. Eight of the nine Pacers who hit the court scored in double-digits.
Goga Bitadze (foot) is questionable, Lance Stephenson (ankle) was downgraded to out while Malcolm Brogdon (concussion) won’t play either Saturday or Sunday.
Myles Turner (foot), T.J. McConnell (wrist), and TJ Warren (foot) are all out indefinitely. Ricky Rubio (ACL) is lost for the season.
San Antonio Spurs
It seemed to take forever for head coach Gregg Popovich to finally get the elusive win to tie Don Nelson for most regular-season wins in NBA history. So many analysts expected after they lost to the Raptors it could be a few games before he passed that mark.
But like Pops has done so many times in his illustrious career he did things on his own terms with his young roster beating the Jazz to give him the sole possession of most regular-season wins.
The young Spurs got the win in dramatic fashion coming back from a double-digit deficit scoring 40 points in the final frame while holding the Jazz to 28 points.
Dejounte Murray led the way with 27 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Jakob Poeltl (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Keldon Johnson (13 points, 10 rebounds) both registered double-doubles.
Zach Collins (15), Josh Richardson (11), and Lonnie Walker IV (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Doug McDermott (illness), Keita Bates-Diop (back), Romeo Langford (hamstring), Devontae Cacok (heel), and Josh Primo (illness) are all questionable for Saturday versus Indy.

Free Indiana Pacers vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Analysis:
.The Spurs have played much better than their record shows. They’ve lost 13 games by five or fewer points. Now that the straw has broken the camel’s back and Pops’ charges got him the win maybe they’ll relax a bit as I’m sure they were pressing to get the job done.
With the major rest advantage, it favors the Pacers but they’ve got a bunch of players out so I like the Spurs to win but Indy to keep it closer than 5.5 points.
