The semi-finals between the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks tips off on Monday. Both clubs won their opening round in six games with Indiana defeating the Milwaukee Bucks while the Knicks beat the Philadelphia 76ers.

New York holds the all-time record having won 100 of the 195 meetings between the clubs. The Eastern Conference foes played four times last season with the Knicks taking three of the four matches while the Pacers took two of the three contests this season.

Round one provided experience for the young Pacers but they’ll discover quickly how physical the Knicks are. Indy will be tasked with trying not to get dominated on the boards and summon a similar defense to what they began to play toward the end of the first round.
In the first round, the Pacers performed better on the glass than Milwaukee but they’ll face the top-ranked offensive rebounding club of the postseason (third for total rebounds).

While the Knicks will defend the paint and be beasts on the boards they’ll need to make some tweaks to their perimeter defense as they’ve allowed the third worst percentage in the playoffs (37.9%) and that was against a Philly team that doesn’t shoot like Indy from deep.
They’ll also need to adjust from defending a slow-paced 76ers squad to a team that comes at them in waves and relies on balanced scoring.
New York plays with the slowest pace of all the playoff teams and while the Pacers have slowed down compared to the regular season Indy will attempt to run and gun so the Knicks can’t easily set up their defense.

New York ranks tied for seventh offensively (117.3) and ninth defensively (112.4) while their net differential is plus +4.9 which ranks fifth overall.
Through the first round of playoff games, New York ranks sixth offensively (116.7), and 13th defensively (116.9) with a minus -0.2 net differential ranking ninth.
With the injuries to the core, the Knicks’ performance against the spread dipped but remains above .500 with a 47-40-1 record through 88 contests.

I think this series should go six but it’ll take at least a game or two for Indy to adjust to the physicality of New York. For that reason I’m taking New York to win Game 1 but I’m also taking the points.
