Saturday, October 29th, the Indiana Pacers and Brooklyn Nets meet for the first of four meetings this season. The teams will play two consecutive games in Brooklyn occurring Saturday and Monday while the Pacers will host matches on November 25th and December 10th.
No doubt the Nets are thrilled with this turn of their schedule having gotten out to a rough start to the season accumulating a 1-4 record. The Mavericks handed them their fourth on Thursday in overtime (125-129).
Brooklyn will benefit from a fatigued Pacers squad who played and beat the Wizards (127-115) on the front side of a back-to-back set Friday.
The Pacers own the all-time record with 108 victories in 188 meetings versus the Nets. Last season the teams played three times with the Nets sweeping the series.
Indiana Pacers
Ironically, the team that is supposed to be tanking arrives in Brooklyn with a better record than the team expected to be vying to win the Eastern Conference and cited as title favorites.
The Pacers owner has frequently stated he wants his teams to compete but the lure of Victor Wembanyama is so appealing, especially envisioning him alongside Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin.
It’s hard to imagine Indy won’t backtrack on that mandate (or perhaps he was simply gaslighting fans). Pacers GM, Chad Buchanan should be busy leading up to the trade deadline shopping Myles Turner and Buddy Hield to bolster his draft closet.
Both players solve specific issues for playoff squads – – Turner is a shot-blocking center who can stretch the court and in the right system can be a defensive plus.
Although defensively challenged, Hield is a 3-point sniper that would bolster a playoff team’s bench scoring.<
The deal most frequently discussed is Russell Westbrook and the Lakers’ two draft picks for a package including both players. However, in my opinion, it would behoove Buchanan to deal them separately as he’s far more likely to get a better haul of picks and assets.
Brooklyn Nets
When analysts, oddsmakers, and talking heads picked the Nets preseason to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals many pointed to their superstar talent.
The reason I kept saying they were a great team “on paper” was because of the presence of superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, 3-point snipers Joe Harris and Seth Curry, a developing young defensive center in Nic Claxton, and a two-time All-Defensive asset in Ben Simmons.
Brooklyn has dealt with injuries and the arduous task of integrating Simmons who doesn’t just seem allergic to offense — he also hasn’t looked strong on the end of the court he should be comfortable on.
Through five games Simmons has attempted 27 shots scoring 28 points, is shooting 40 percent from the charity stripe (4 of 10), has committed 14 turnovers, and fouled out twice.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Pacers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
- The Nets are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
- Over is 9-3 in the Pacers’ last 12 overall.
- Over is 22-5-1 in the Nets’ last 28 vs. a team with a losing straight-up record.
Free Indiana Pacers vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
Proving why you never pick ‘paper’ teams as title contenders consider how effective KD and Irving have been in their past three games. Both scored 37 in Memphis, 33 (KD)/27 (Irving) in Milwaukee, and 37 (KD)/39 (Irving) versus Dallas.
The problem? They allowed Ja Morant and Desmond Banes to both score 38, Antetokounmpo to score 43 (combine with Jrue Holiday for 58), while Luka registered a triple-double of 41 points, 11 rebounds, and 14 assists. AND they lost all three matches.
Brooklyn finally figured out they can’t play Simmons and Claxton together because of what it does to the floor spacing (and because one won’t shoot). They’re only valuable if the Nets are shutting teams down but their 30th defensive ranking screams NO.
It’s likely the Nets will win these next two games and has a relatively easy schedule segment on tap – but don’t get caught up in them beating tanking clubs because this team would be best described as the Lakers East.
That said, the Pacers lost to the 76ers and Bulls by 14 and 15 points respectively and they weren’t playing a back-to-back in those games so I like the Nets to win and cover.
The bigger question is will they be able to refrain from getting up large and then rubbing it in the Pacers’ faces? (something they have a tendency to do). If they do expect a split instead of two wins in Brooklyn.
