It’s becoming comical how good James Harden is with the ball in his hands. We all heard Stephen Curry and Denver Nuggets head coach (and West All-Star head coach) Mike Malone go viral during an ASG practice when Curry said Harden told him he doesn’t want to play hero ball any longer.

In theory, this makes sense. James Harden’s USG is consistently among the league’s highest and the milage he puts on his body makes it borderline impossible to sustain success deep into the playoffs.

But man alive…he’s just not slowing down.

Until the Rockets can prove they have at least three other consistent scoring option—or the unthinkable happens and Mike D’Antoni/Darly Morey decide to abandon the current game plan—Harden needs to keep it going for the sake of playoff positioning.

In his last outing, Harden led all scorers with 42 points. Before that: 50. And before that: 30 and 28.

In fact, there have only been seven Rockets games this season where Harden was not the leading scorer—three of which Harden did not play in.

Harden’s case for MVP is strong. He just needs to get past a certain Freak of Greek persuasion over the final stretch.

Toronto Raptors

The Raptors have done an incredible job this season of resting Kawhi Leonard at the right times and remaining competitive without him on the court. You could make the case he’s looked more like the 10th-best player than the third-best this season, but Toronto has proved to be more than just its two stars at the top.

Against the Rockets, the Raptors can’t afford to let Leonard take possessions off defensively.

You don’t earn the nickname “The Klaw” without being a great defender, and it’s that type of elite defensive performance that’s going to help get this team over the edge.

Otherwise, Harden will go Full Beard all over The North.

What will likely happen is that Harden will play a fairly conservative game early in an attempt to get Kawhi off of him, and when Leonard switches, that’s when the Beard will strike.

But that conservative start could put the Rockets in an insurmountable hole—at least it’ll be insurmountable against a team as talented as the Raptors.
