Sunday, March 13th, finds the Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans playing for the fourth and final time this season.
New Orleans leads the season series 2-1 having bested the Rockets in a February 6th (120-107) and 8th (110-97) consecutive set while the Rockets won on December 5th (118-108)
Both teams last played on Friday with the Rockets losing 100-113 to the Mavericks while the Pelicans fell 120-142 to the Hornets.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Pelicans winning two of the three contests. The Rockets hold the advantage all-time winning 41 of the 73 matches versus the Pelicans.
Houston Rockets
All of the tanking teams seem to be on a mission lately to play spoiler with the Rockets joining that crew via their surprise win versus the Lakers (mind you everyone looks like they can beat LA lately unless LeBron drops a 50-piece).
But true to form the Rockets were back in tank mode the next game versus the Mavericks.
Josh Christopher and Kevin Porter Jr. led the scoring effort for Houston with 17 each. Bruno Fernando delivered a double-double of 16 points (career-best) and 11 rebounds.
Jalen Green and Kenyon Martin Jr. each offered 11 points as the other double-figure contributors.
Christian Wood (illness) and Jae’Sean Tate (ankle) were upgraded to probable. Usman Garuba (wrist) and John Wall (personal) are out.
New Orleans Pelicans
Just as it looked like the Pelicans had turned a corner they were dealt with not one but two tough blows. First, Brandon Ingram suffered a hamstring strain that is expected to keep him out seven to 10 days.
Initially, that seemed like not terrible news given how well CJ McCollum had integrated and was running the team but then the other shoe dropped with news McCollum would be out in quarantine due to COVID protocols.
Seriously, if it weren’t for bad luck the Pelicans would have no luck at all.
So when they got into a track meet against the Hornets the outcome was pretty much decided before the tip. Sure, it’s fun to see teams score crazy points like that but if you’re a purist who enjoys defense you’ll need to look elsewhere.
Ironically, only one Pelican scored over 20 points and that was Trey Murphy III with 32. Devonte Graham and Willy Hernangomez were the next closest with 19 points and 15 points respectively.
The youngsters were front and center with Naji Marshall (14), Herb Jones (12), and Jaxson Hayes (13) providing the other double-digit efforts.
McCollum (quarantine), Ingram (hamstring), and Larry Nance Jr. (knee) are out indefinitely. Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) is lost for the season and Williamson (foot) continues to be away from the team as he works to come back from his surgery.
