Monday, March 7th, finds the Houston Rockets facing the Miami Heat for the second and final time this season. Miami won the initial match 120-110 played on December 31st.
Houston is playing a back-to-back that featured them shocking the Grizzlies on the front side via a 123-112 victory on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Heat is coming off a big 99-82 victory versus the 76ers albeit without James Harden in the lineup but Miami didn’t have Kyle Lowry.
Last season the clubs played twice with the Heat winning both contests. The Heat holds the all-time record with 36 wins in 69 matches versus the Rockets.
Houston Rockets
The Rockets’ losing streak had ballooned to 13 in a row so it was inevitable they would grow weary of continual losing and stop the bleeding which is precisely what they did Sunday.
Houston has two win streaks, the first lasted seven games back at the end of November/start of December and two games in mid-January. So, the likelihood they’ll go on another larger run isn’t likely especially with them eyeing one of the coveted bottom three records.
This is in order to have the best odds of winning the top draft pick from the 2022 class which features three quality big men.
They’ve been in the mix of those three spots all season but with the Magic and Pistons’ recent success the Rockets currently possess the worst record in the Association.
With 18 games remaining they’ll play eight elite teams and 10 with sub .500 records but have enough of a pad now that they can afford to win some of those games.
Dennis Schroder (ankle) and Usman Garuba (wrist) are questionable for Monday. John Wall remains on the shelf as the Rockets failed to find a trade partner and are in a stalemate regarding a buy-out given his massive salary.
Miami Heat
Even though Harden wasn’t in the lineup – the 76ers can’t be thrilled about the prospect of playing this Heat team.
They possess copious 3-point shooters, can drive it down the lane, have Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo who are equally adept at scoring from the mid-range or in the case of Bam catching lobs for dunks.
The defense creates turnovers that allow the Heat to get out on the fast break and they mix up their schemes so frequently it’s hard to counter Erik Spoelstra or plan ahead to offset his brilliance.
In the win versus the 76ers, Butler led the way with 21 points while Bam had a quiet six points and 10 rebounds — but dig deeper and even though it was a team effort to limit Embiid, Adebayo was the primary with Embiid shooting 4 of 15!
Jimmy Butler (toe), PJ Tucker (knee), Max Strus (shoulder), and Caleb Martin (Achilles)were all listed as questionable versus Philly, yet only Martin is questionable for Monday.
Kyle Lowry (personal) was downgraded to out. Markieff Morris (conditioning) and Victor Oladipo (knee/conditioning) are out indefinitely.

When the postseason arrives which is what they were really assembled for – I don’t care if it’s the 76ers, Bucks, or Nets it’s simply hard to bet against them.
So – yeah I’m taking them to beat the Rockets but the 15.5 point spread is slightly too rich for my liking.
