The Rockets were supposed to be the tired team having just been pushed to seven games in their first-round series. And, the Lakers were supposed to steamroll Houston especially since they had six full days to rest and prepare.
Instead, the Rockets appeared to be the fresher of the two teams as they surprised the Lakers with their speed and stole Game 1.
Houston Rockets
James Harden hasn’t ever been accused of being a defensive savant but he and his Rockets are playing some of the best defense in the Disney bubble.
The fourth quarter proved to bet the difference as Houston outscored the Lakers 27-18 in the final frame on route to a 112-97 victory.
The Achilles heel of the Lakers has been stopping great backcourts and the superstars for the Rockets took that intel and made them pay. James Harden scored 36 points while Russell Westbrook dropped 24 points along with six assists and nine rebounds.
Eric Gordon added 23 points while Austin Rivers chipped in 10 points equating to four Rockets guards all reaching double-figure scoring.
Danuel House suffered a head injury in Game 1 and is listed as questionable for Game 2 while Luc Mbah a Moute (knee) is also questionable.
Los Angeles Lakers
Although the Lakers boast two superstars of their own in LeBron James and Anthony Davis they weren’t able to best the Rockets stars, or rather their supporting staff didn’t offer much assistance.
As expected Davis poses a real issue for Houston as he delivered a double-double of 25 points and 14 rebounds. James flirted with a triple-double of 20 points, seven assists, and eight rebounds. Alex Caruso (14) and Danny Green (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Both superstars are dealing with minor ailments — Davis has a sprained pinkie finger and James is still dealing with a sore groin, but both will play Sunday.
Rajon Rondo made his return to the lineup in Game 1 collecting eight points, four assists and three rebounds in just over 24 minutes but his presence wasn’t as helpful as the Lakers hoped.

Free Houston Rockets vs. Los Angeles Lakers NBA Prediction:
The two things that have caused LA problems throughout their stay at the bubble is stopping quality backcourts and putting points on the board. With Westbrook back in the lineup for Houston that situation becomes more glaring due to the pace Houston utilizes.
Likewise, there isn’t anyone on the Rockets who can stop Anthony Davis or comes close to his size so he’ll have to do more in order to help his Lakers win.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Bet the under
LA also lost the initial game to the Blazers prior to winning the next four in a row and while some of the Game 1 loss can be blamed on too much rest this Rockets team won’t be as simple to get by.
Still, expect James and Davis to lead the charge to ensure they put more points on the board to even up the series.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
