The Rockets got lucky in Game 7 versus the Thunder with some strange officiating and even stranger OKC play calls down the stretch combined with a typical cold performance from James Harden in an elimination game.
They’ve earned the right to face the top Western Conference seeded Lakers but got a single day to prepare while LA has been resting since August 29th.
The teams met three times during the season with the Rockets winning two of three games.
Houston Rockets
It wasn’t supposed to take seven games for the Rockets to dispense of the Oklahoma City Thunder but there they were with the team superstar struggling offensively.
The league’s scoring champ scored 17 points on 4 of 15 from the field with 1 of 9 from the perimeter Ironically, it was Harden’s defensive block on the rookie who had guarded him all series, (Lu Dort) that likely saved the Rockets season.
Robert Covington registered a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds while Eric Gordon (21), Russell Westbrook (20), and Jeff Green (13) were the other double-figure contributors.
Luc Mbah a Moute (knee) who hasn’t appeared in the postseason yet has been upgraded to questionable for Friday.
Los Angeles Lakers
.After six days of rest, the Lakers look to shake off the rust following the gentleman’s sweep of the Blazers. In the series-clinching game, LeBron James delivered a triple-double of 36 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Anthony Davis added 43 points and nine rebounds while Kenatavious Caldwell-Pope (14) and Dwight Howard (11) chipped in double-figure scores.
Through the first round of the playoffs, James is averaging a triple-double while Davis is producing just shy of a double-double.
Rajon Rondo suffered a fractured thumb during the bubble training camp and was expected to return against Portland until back spasms kept him sidelined. Coach Frank Vogel was hopeful for Rondo to play on Friday but is listed as questionable due to the same spasms.
Dion Waiters is dealing with migraines also making him questionable for Friday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Under is 10-4 in HOU last 14 overall.
- HOU are 18-8 ATS in their last 26 vs. NBA Pacific
- LAL are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games overall
- Over is 11-5 in the last 16 meetings.
Free Houston Rockets vs. Los Angeles Lakers NBA Prediction:
This series isn’t as straight forward as it might seem. The small-ball Rockets don’t have the size or personnel to come close to dealing with Anthony Davis, let alone LeBron James.
Alternatively, the Lakers struggle against good backcourts. Harden is the league scoring leader and there isn’t anyone on the LA backcourt who can deal with Westbrook’s speed.
Something else to keep an eye on is the much-improved defense of the Rockets since coming to Orlando.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Lakers -6
The quick turnaround isn’t likely to answer the above question until later in the series.
Much like the Clippers easily dispensed of the Nuggets given the rest versus rust situation this opening game of the series is likely to go the way of the Lakers.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
