Houston Rockets vs. LA Lakers Odds & Last 5
For the past two campaigns, the Lakers have won the regular-season series, two games to one versus the Rockets.
There is a long-storied history of postseason meetings between these clubs as they’ve met on nine previous occasions. LA has won on six of those occasions, including the last time they tipped off in 2020.
To finish the season, the Rockets hit their stride, winning nine of their last 10 matches. LA had won 13 of 14 but then got hit by injuries to Luka Doncic and Austin Reeves, and the team finished 3-3 through the final six contests.
Houston is favored by 5.5 points with an over/under of 207.5 points.

The West’s fourth seed averages 116.3 points per game while its opponents average 114.6 points. In terms of dimes and boards, the Lakers average 25.9 (17th) and 41.0 (27th), respectively.

Houston Rockets vs. LA Lakers bottom line:
The obvious elephant in the room is rebounding, where the Rockets rank at the top of the association, and the Lakers rank 27th!
Perhaps with Doncic and Reeves out, J.J. Redick will be able to get more out of the replacements; however, it’s imperative that the Lakers try to be competitive on the glass, or the Rockets will have major advantages in fast break and second chance scoring.

Rockets Lakers Free Pick: Rockets -5.5
Here is my Rockets Lakers free pick.
The Lakers have been one of the best offenses this season (10th); however, the defense (20th) lacks a lot to be desired. That’s due to the teams’ slowness, and when your young superstar is Doncic, it’s understandable why the rest of the team is focused on defense, though it’s not translating on the court.
Bench scoring will be a struggle for both squads as the Rockets reserves rank 30th in scoring while the Lakers reserves rank 29th.
If LA wants to make it a series, first of all, they need to try to extend it and hope Doncic can return. Look for them to try to slow the pace and junk up the defensive end of the court.
That’s not a bad strategy, given Houston has a propensity to go through lengthy dry spells on offense. Albeit, they ended the season with the number eight offense, which was likely a byproduct of Ime Udoka utilizing Reed Sheppard more.
The issue with that strategy is Sheppard is a sieve defensively, so it’s likely JJ Redick looks to drive as much of their offense directly at him when he’s on the court.
Ultimately, LA is at a major disadvantage with their top two scorers (56.8 points combined) sidelined, and when your bench struggles to score, you have to wonder where those points get made up. LeBron James will do his best to pick up some of the slack, but he can’t be expected to carry all of the load.
Given that fact, I’ll take the Rockets in Game 1 to win and cover.
