Thursday, February 17th, 2022 finds the Houston Rockets facing the LA Clippers for the first of three meetings this season. Houston will host the next two meetings on February 27th and March 1st at the Toyota Center.
The Rockets are playing a back-to-back set having lost 121-124 to the Suns on Wednesday while the Clippers last played Tuesday also against the Suns in a 96-103 loss.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Clippers winning two of the three contests. The Rockets hold the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 124 of their 206 matches.
Houston Rockets
Several of the Rockets youngsters are headed to Cleveland to participate in the festivities. Specifically, Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, and Jae’Sean Tate will play in the Clorox Rising Stars event.
Both Sengun and Tate are part of Team Worthy (James) while Green is on Team Barry (Rick) and is also one of four players in the AT&T Slam Dunk contest.
Sengun probably wishes the Rockets could keep playing as he delivered a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds along with three assists, two steals, and a block.
It was only Sengun’s fifth start as he filled in for the ailing Christian Wood. The latter was rumored to be shopped at the deadline and with the production of the rookie when he gets more playing time it’s hard to argue the reasoning.
This is the third of a four-game road trip that straddles the All-Star break that began in Utah then traveled to Phoenix (both were losses).
Dennis Schroder (Achilles), Christian Wood (illness), Kevin Porter Jr. (illness), and Usman Garuba (wrist) are all questionable to participate Thursday versus the Clippers.
John Wall remains on the shelf as the Rockets failed to find a trade partner to take on his salary and are in a stalemate regarding a buy-out given his massive salary.
LA Clippers
Surely if Kawhi Leonard and Paul George weren’t out injured they’d very likely be headed to Cleveland. Instead, the Clippers will have to suffice with Luke Kennard representing the franchise as a participant in the MTN DEW 3-Point Contest.
Despite missing their stars and with Norman Powell already injured and out the Clippers have done a good job of riding the middle ground registering a balanced 6-6 record through their last 12 matches.
The scheduling gods didn’t favor LA as their recent five-game stint featuring the Grizzlies, Mavericks (twice), Warriors, and Suns with only the Warriors game at home. They went 2-3 and pushed the Suns to cluch time in spite of playing them in the second game of a back-to-back.
Powell (foot), Jason Preston (foot), Paul George (elbow), and Kawhi Leonard (knee) are all out indefinitely. Jay Scrubb (toe) is lost for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Clippers are 6-4 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Rockets are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 matches
- The over/under is 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head matches
- The Clippers are 2-4 SU in their last 6 games.
- Houston is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 6 of the LA Clippers’ last 8 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Houston’s last 5 games.
Free Houston Rockets vs. LA Clippers NBA Prediction:
Houston has lost six games in a row and led for most of the game versus the Suns with it being the only match of the six they didn’t lose by double-digits.
Of the Clippers’ 31 losses, 11 occurred against teams with sub .500 records whereas four of the Rockets’ 15 wins were against teams with records above .500.
After that tough five-game segment the Clippers have to be careful not to let their guard down and minds wander to vacation time. This is a prime trap game with Houston looking like easy prey on a back-to-back and several core players out.
Ty Lue will ensure his players don’t fall prey to the trap but I’m not confident they’ll cover the 10 point spread so take the points and the Rockets.
