Friday, January 21st, finds the Houston Rockets playing the Golden State Warriors for the second time this season. The initial match was also hosted by Golden State on November 7th and won (120-107) by the Warriors. The teams will play once more this season on January 31st in Houston.
The Rockets last played on Wednesday, shocking the Jazz by beating them 116-111 while the Warriors are playing a back-to-back set and enter this match having lost 117-121 to the Pacers on Thursday.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Warriors taking all three contests and holding a current four-game winning streak versus Houston. The Rockets have won 126 of the 224 matches played between the clubs all-time.
Houston Rockets
A perfect example of never taking a team for granted was displayed Wednesday when the Rockets beat the Jazz behind a focused energetic effort from Houston. Like they did earlier in the season the Rockets are on an upswing having won three of their last four games.
Leading the effort for Houston was Garrison Mathews who connected on five of his 3-point attempts to score 23 points. Christian Wood delivered a double-double of 13 points and 16 rebounds plus four assists, and a block.
Helping collect the victory was Jae’sean Tate who scored 18 points, Eric Gordon added 16 points while Kevin Porter Jr. flirted with a double-double scoring 15 points along with eight assists.
The only starter who failed to reach double-digits was rookie Jalen Green who had a rough shooting night (3 of 13) scoring seven points.
The Rockets are one of the few teams who are essentially fully healthy. While John Wall remains on the injury report that is tied to the decision to develop the Rockets youth while looking for a team who would consider trading for him.
Golden State Warriors
Having only lost 13 games this season, the Warriors are struggling of late with five of those losses occurring in their last eight games. The most recent coming in the loss to the Pacers on Thursday.
Stephen Curry who had been struggling with his shot did his best to lead the Warriors to a win scoring 39 points with eight assists, five rebounds, a steal, and connected on six 3-pointers. Aside from Curry, the only other players to hit a 3-pointer were Wiggins, Damion Lee and Juan Toscano-Anderson who each hit one.
The superstar was the only Warrior who was efficient from deep as Golden State attempted 42 shots from deep and hit only nine (21 percent). Making matters worse the Pacers were missing many of their core including the trio of Domantas Sabonis, Malcolm Brogdon, and Caris LeVert.
While Curry seemed to reclaim his shooting stroke Andrew Wiggins (5 of 15) and Klay Thompson (6 of 16) struggled to find the range as they scored 11 and 12 points respectively.
Kevon Looney served up a double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds. Rookie Jonathan Kuminga started again
Otto Porter Jr. sat on Thursday for rest while Thompson and Iguodala will sit on Friday for rest. Draymond Green (calf/back) will be out for at least another two weeks while James Wiseman (knee) continues to ramp up his efforts to make his season debut.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Rockets are 4-12 ATS in their last 16 games.
- The Warriors are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 13 of Houston’s last 18 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Golden State’s last 6 games.
Free Houston Rockets vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Prediction:
With Houston playing better the 10.5 point spread might seem far too rich, but after a night when the Warriors shot so poorly they’ll be focused on hitting the Rockets early and maintaining their defensive focus the full 48 minutes.
Golden State is 4-3 on second games and has only lost consecutive games twice this season both occurring in 2022. That said, I’m banking on the Dubs winning and covering despite Houston having the rest advantage.
