A battle of the West’s sixth and seventh seeds closes out the itinerary on day two of the season restart when the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks play.
It’s also a showdown of former MVP backcourt duo James Harden and Russell Westbrook vs the modern era superstar duo featuring Luka Doncic and his uniquely talented side kick Kristaps Porzingis.
This match pits the league’s leading scorer Harden against the NBA’s top-rated Mav’s offense.
Houston Rockets
Harden’s hiatus weight loss was likely undertaken to help him streamline his body for the small ball Rockets experiment. Based on his 30 point first half in the last scrimmage versus the Celtics, his scoring touch certainly wasn’t affected.
Russell Westbrook reached the Disney bubble late after testing positive for COVID-19 but showed no ill effects in the scrimmages.
The Rockets will be without Eric Gordon who suffered a bad ankle sprain in the last scrimmage that will keep him out two to three weeks.
Thabo Sefolosha opted out and DeMarre Carroll is out nursing a sore hamstring. Austin Rivers is back after an excused absence and expected to play.
The big question surrounding the Rockets’ small-ball system is how it will hold up long term particularly when Houston faces teams with mobile big men of which the Mavericks have one of the best.
Dallas Mavericks
Their seventh-place seeding is not indicative of how good this Dallas club is although no one expected the club and the incredible Luka Doncic to propel his Mavs into the playoffs in his sophomore season.
If the team was seeded a few spots higher Doncic’s 28.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game would likely have him flirting with filling the third spot on the MVP ballot.
In his first full season back after recovering from the torn ACL, Kristaps Porzingis looks more and more comfortable in Rick Carlisle’s system and is developing a nice chemistry with Luka. It’ll be interesting to see who guards the 7’3 unicorn since Houston’s starting center is 6’5″ P.J. Tucker.
Dwight Powell (Achilles), Jalen Brunson (shoulder), and Courtney Lee (calf) are all lost for the season and Willie Cauley-Stein opted out.
Seth Curry (ankle) and Dorian Finney-Smith (hip) are both questionable.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Mavericks are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 head to head contests
- Rockets are 7-3 in last 10 head to head
- Over Under is 3-6-1 in team’s last 10 head to head matchups
Free Houston Rockets vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
One of the teams the Rockets beat once they committed to small ball was the Mavericks with Harden and Westbrook each scoring over 30 points and combining for 67.
However, Doncic was out for that match while Porzingis delivered a double-double of 35 points and 12 rebounds so this game should have a different dynamic with all four stars available.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Mavericks -1
In spite of the Mavericks’ blistering offense, they struggle in clutch situations while the Rockets will need to figure out how to rebound against the length of Dallas.
The over feels like a natural bet but the teams averaged 112 (Mavs) and 113 (Rockets) through their three scrimmages with the latter being influenced by a 137 scoring outburst without the majority of the Celtics starters playing.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
