The Houston Rockets travel to their Texas counterparts the Dallas Mavericks in their fourth and final meeting of the season. The Rockets last played Friday easily beating the Philadelphia 76ers 107-91 who were without their big man Joel Embiid for the eighth consecutive game. The Mavericks, on the other hand, lost a close battle with the Orlando Magic by a score of 106-111.
Last season, the Rockets swept the four-game series while Dallas has the two games to one edge this year. The Rockets hold the all-time record having bested the Mavericks in 95 of their 178 matches.
At season start that Houston struggled with the loss of Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute particularly on defense. Then when Chris Paul and Clint Capela went out injured the Rockets season appeared in jeopardy.
Fortunately, Houston has the current MVP James Harden who stepped up going on an amazing streak of 30 point scoring efforts and willing his squad to victories.
Harden served up a bit of a scare Friday when he fell, landing on his wrist. He left the court for x-rays but it was determined his wrist is fine and he’s expected to play Sunday. With the win, Houston became the ninth team to earn 40 wins and overtook the third seed.
Although General Manager Daryl Morey took some heat for the CP3 contract and his offseason choices he’s rebounded well. Through trades or economically minimum deals, Morey added Gerald Green, Austin Rivers, Kenneth Faried, and Iman Shumpert.
Those four shored up Houston’s defensive depth to allow them to re-join the elite teams in the West. Faried (adductor strain) missed the last four games and is questionable for Sunday.
The Mavericks are the Jekyll and Hyde team of the NBA when it comes to home and road performance. At home the squad feasts with a 21-11 record, but on the road, they struggle garnering only six wins in 33 contests.
Still, Luka Doncic makes every game a must watch event as the rookie showcases his unique style of basketball. Although Trae Young is making the Rookie of the Year race a bit more interesting he arrived a little too late to the party.
Case in point, Doncic leads the Mavericks in points (21.1), assists (5.6), rebounds (7.3), field goal percent (43.4) and steals (1.1). The only major categories he doesn’t own is blocks and three-point percentage.
Maxi Kleber (left knee effusion) missed the last two games and is questionable.
