Game 3 saw Portland once again get out to a huge first-half lead…and once again squander it away.
The home team Blazers now trail 0-3 and aim to become the first squad in league history to dig themselves out of such a deep postseason hole.
It won’t be easy.
It’ll be damn near impossible.
But in the interest of having a “one game at a time” mentality, they’ll show up to play the Dubs at least once more in this Western Conference series.
Golden State Warriors
Golden State has no need to change anything about its gameplan. Seriously—and that’s something most teams up 3-0 in a series can’t claim.
The fact is, the Warriors have fallen behind big time in both contests. They’ve been in tightly contested portions of the fourth period. And they’ve outlasted Portland through all of it.
The Dubs’ defense is blitzing the Blazers’ guards to big-time success and the team’s offense is letting Curry run the show like the B.D. years again (Before Durant). Portland can’t get Lillard involved at an efficient rate to match point guard star power for point guard star power, and although Curry and Klay Thompson are dominating headlines with their shooting, Draymond Green may be the most important player in this series so far with his defense.
But there’s another reason the Warriors don’t need to change their approach: If they end up losing this game, they’re very, very confident that it’s an anomaly and their continued approach will resume its previous success back home where they have to fly regardless of Monday’s outcome.
Golden State can afford to coast if they fall behind late, which is good for predicting their urgency levels and style of play—not great, however, for wondering what they’re going to look like against a betting line that isn’t yet set as of this writing.
Portland Trail Blazers
If the Warriors don’t need to change anything, the Blazers might want to consider the opposite approach.
I wrote it earlier this series, but Lillard needs to try—as unfair an ask as it is—to quickly and on the fly develop a little bit of Curry’s relocation 3 tendencies. When he’s coming off the pick, he’s getting stuck. So far, it’s not a death sentence; Curry gets stuck with the ball there all the time, too. The difference is that Lillard is dropping back and (mostly) standing still waiting to get the ball back in an isolation setting.
What he should be doing is bolting for the corner pocket or taking the long route past a screen or two in order to come out on the opposite side the new ball-handler.
Lillard isn’t hitting his shots because the best looks he’s getting are of the opportunistic variety “open” beyond 30 feet.
He needs better looks, and to get them, he can’t sit back and hope to play iso ball play in and play out.

Free Golden State Warriors vs. Portland Trail Blazers Prediction: Blazers are spent.
This game could really go one of two ways: Portland gets out to a big lead and Golden State (who as previously mentioned has to fly back home anyway) concedes and the Blazers get the one big win they need in a respectable gentleman’s sweep…or the Blazers, who are physically and emotionally drained, are done by halftime—or the third quarter at best.
4* Free NBA Playoff Betting Pick: Warriors -3.5
As much as Portland fans would like to see this series go on, the latter seems the more likely of the two scenarios at this team.
Both teams played hard. God bless and goodnight.
