Tuesday, March 1st, the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves play for the fourth and final time this season. Golden State is up 2-1 on the season series winning November 10th (123-110) and January 27th (124-115) while the Wolves won (119-99) on January 16th.
The Warriors arrive on the heels of an embarrassing 101-107 loss to the Mavericks where they allowed Dallas to erase a double-digit deficit while the Wolves are playing a back-to-back set having bested the Cavaliers 127-122 on Monday.
Golden State Warriors
It was inevitable the Warriors were going to experience some defensive slippage without Draymond Green but they’ve also done some uncharacteristic things they need to clean up.
Such as coughing up a double-digit (21 points) lead. The best defensive teams communicate and utilize specific game plans tailored to limit the competition from their strengths and adapt to in-game situations.
But perhaps in its simplest terms defense is about energy and effort which is where the Dubs fell short on Sunday versus Dallas. Watch the second half and you’ll witness repeated defensive errors punctuated by a lack of effort.
The regression defensively isn’t an isolated incident either. On the season the Warriors still possess the top-ranked defense (104.5) but in the month of February, they slipped to 16th (113.2) with close to a 10 point differential.
With the Dubs’ recent struggles (2-5) Steve Kerr has been calling out their defensive issues for over a month. Moving forward undoubtedly the team will make adjustments but what they absolutely must do is bring the effort and energy.
Andre Iguodala (back) and Klay Thompson (illness) are questionable to play Tuesday. Green (calf/back) and James Wiseman (knee) are out indefinitely.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Considering the Wolves are the team playing with the rest disadvantage the “even” spread offers glimpses inside the minds of the oddsmakers.
It’s partially due to the recent slippage of Golden State and their injury situation. However, this is also a testament to the improved performance and recent success of Minnesota.
They are 9-4 through the last 13 games with three of their losses to playoff seeds (Bulls, Raptors, 76ers). For the first time in years, there is joy in Minnesota as the team is gelling behind their new big 3 (Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards, D’Angelo Russell).
Head coach Chris Finch has the team playing freely on offense but the big news is their marked improvement on the defensive side of the hardwood.
They rank 17th (110.5) this season. I recognize I just highlighted the issue of the Dubs’ 16th February rank but this situation is completely different given the Wolves’ 28th rank (114.5) last season.
Malik Beasley (illness) was upgraded to probable while McKinley Wright IV is nursing an elbow injury and was downgraded to out Tuesday versus the Warriors.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Warriors are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 matches versus each other
- The over/under is 8-2 in the team’s last 10 head to head matches
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
The length of the Wolves will be an issue for Golden State who’ll need to bring the defensive energy from the tip. They have the rest advantage and a fire in their bellies following that embarrassing loss to Dallas.
Tough call, featuring my preseason picks to win the West versus my dark horse (who is finally living up those expectations). Ultimately I’m going with the Dubs as elite teams typically respond emphatically following an embarrassing loss.
