Sunday, January 16th, the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves play for the second time this season. In the initial meeting on November 10th, the Warriors won 123-110. The teams will play twice more with the next match in San Francisco on January 27th and in Minnesota on March 1st.
The Warriors last played Friday in a rout of the top-ranked Eastern team with a 138-96 winning effort versus the Bulls while the Timberwolves last played Thursday in a losing 108-116 effort to the Grizzlies.
Golden State Warriors
The win versus the Bulls was precisely what the Warriors needed after a tough stretch that has witnessed them lose four of five games. Clearly, not having Draymond Green impacted the defensive end of the court but the losses also punctuate how vital he is to making the Dubs offense run smoothly.
Despite missing Green, Klay Thompson (rest), and Gary Payton II (back) the Dubs broke out with one of their best offensive efforts.
Rookie Jonathan Kuminga put his talents on display leading the Warriors with 25 points plus three rebounds, three assists, a steal, and three blocks. Kevon Looney served up a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Jordan Poole (22), Andrew Wiggins (21), Stephen Curry (19), and Damion Lee (10) were the other double-figure contributors. Golden State shot 45.2 percent from the perimeter connecting on 19 triples and also won the rebounding (47-36), fast break scoring (18-11) and points in the paint (56-42) categories.
All was not perfect, however, as Curry took a tumble and hurt his hand and although he stayed in the game afterward it was reported he was dealing with a sore wrist. After fracturing his non-shooting hand the fall surely caused a scare as this time it was his shooting hand that he hurt.
As a precaution, the Warriors will sit Curry Sunday to give him a few days to heal and given his early workload he could also likely use the R and R time.
Green (calf) remains out while Payton (back) is questionable and James Wiseman is out.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Wolves have been off since their loss on Thursday so has the rest advantage. There is no shame in losing to the Grizzlies who were one of, if not “the” hottest team in the NBA, and Minnesota kept it close to the buzzer.
If they stay true to their character of winning and losing in bunches, this contest would fall in the loss column, but with Curry, Green, and possibly Payton all out it will give the healthier Wolves a definite advantage.
On Thursday, the Wolves Big 3 were rolling but got little assistance from their support group. Anthony Edwards was the leading scorer with 30 points.
Karl-Anthony Towns delivered 25 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks while D’Angelo Russell pitched in with 29 points and six assists. As noted ‘the others’ struggled and in particular the bench was lacking with the Grizzlies reserves outscoring them 48 to 13.
Jordan McLaughlin (quarantine) is out Sunday while Jaylen Nowell (ankle) and Leandro Bolmaro (quarantine) are both questionable.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Wolves are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games.
- The Warriors are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 13 of Minnesota’s last 19 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Golden State’s last 6 games
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
Even with two of the Big 3 missing, I’m still a bit surprised the Wolves are favored by 4.5 points. This is a great opportunity for Thompson’s new teammates to develop some chemistry with him. Andrew Wiggins always gets up to face his former squad and I like the Dubs to not only keep it close – but steal the victory.
