Game two of the Western Conference semi-finals between the third-seeded Golden State Warriors and second-seeded Memphis Grizzlies tips off on Tuesday, May 3rd. Golden State took the early series lead via a 117-116 nailbiter.
The Grizzlies won the 2021-22 season series 3-1. The Warriors hold the all-time advantage having won 51 times of the club’s 91 regular-season meetings.
This is the second time the clubs are playing in the postseason with Golden State having won 4-2 in the 2015 semi-finals, ironically the same season they won their first of three titles in four years.
Golden State Warriors
The Warriors dodged a bullet on Sunday weathering the storm of losing Draymond Green to a flagrant 2 foul call that led to his ejection before the half.
Most 50-50 calls went the way of the Grizzlies including an out-of-bounds tap that the referees elected to jump off at center instead of reviewing at game end.
That meant Memphis had the ball in their hands with 3.6 seconds remaining in a one-point game and if the Grizzlies had won there would’ve been a lot of shouting after the fact about those questionable calls.
That said, it was a highly entertaining opening game of the series. Jordan Poole led the way posting another playoff best of 31 points including five deep balls (5 of 10).
Steph Curry offered 24 points while Andrew Wiggins scored 17 and Klay Thompson chipped in 15 but was instrumental to all the key plays at the end of the match including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 36 seconds remaining.
He was then fouled with 6.7 remaining but uncharacteristically missed both free throws and on the second the Grizzlies knocked the ball out of bounds but the refs couldn’t agree on who the ball went off so they jumped the ball at center with Memphis winning the tip.
Clarke took the pass and delivered it to a streaking Ja Morant but Thompson read the play the entire way cutting down the speedster’s driving lane which led to a missed layup.
Andre Iguodala (neck) will be re-evaluated mid-week. James Wiseman (knee) is out.
Memphis Grizzlies
Grizzlies star Ja Morant delivered a double-double of 34 points and 10 assists plus nine rebounds and three steals.
The loss wasted a playoff career-best 33 points from Jaren Jackson Jr . who connected on six 3-pointers and also collected a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Brandon Clarke played the role of x-factor again with 12 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.
Although the Warriors defended Desmond Bane well he also seemed to be hampered by something not moving as well as normal. He scored just nine points and took only 10 shots (3 of 10).
D’Anthony Melton was the only other double-figure scorer with 14.
Ziaire Williams (knee) is questionable. Steven Adams (health and safety), Santi Aldama (knee), and Killian Tillie (knee) are out.

Free Golden State Warriors vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
Steve Kerr played all the right cards in the opener starting Gary Payton II to cover Morant although he was still efficient the youngster wore him down as the game progressed.
Bringing Poole off the bench resulted in him lighting up the Grizzlies’ reserves and considering Green missed half the game this really was a lost opportunity for Memphis who’ll be feeling the pressure to win this game to even the series.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was the Warriors won two categories the Grizzlies typically dominate. Despite being smaller, the Warriors won the battle of the boards (51-47) tying the Grizzlies with 16 offensive rebounds.
The other key category Golden State won was scoring in the paint (56-44) an area the Grizzlies dominated in season with a league-best 57.6 points and also lead all postseason teams (51.7).
Expect Taylor Jenkins to have his young squad amped up to take control from the tip and get back to their identity of paint scoring and winning the glass.
Although it truly feels like losing Game 1 put the Grizzlies in a much bigger hole than one game especially with Green out they’ll need to summon that invincibility they’ve showcased all season to even up this series before heading to San Francisco for the next two games.
