Saturday, March 5th marks the third of four meetings between the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers.
Golden State won both prior meetings on October 19th (121-114) and February 12th (117-115). The Pacific Division rivals will wrap up the regular-season series on April 7th in San Francisco.
Both clubs are mired in a slump although one team is in a far better position given their early success.
The Lakers are reeling having lost four in a row with the most recent occurring Thursday versus the Clippers in a 111-132 beatdown. Meanwhile, the Warriors lost to the Mavericks (113-122) for the second time in four days.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Lakers taking two of the three contests. The Lakers have won 257 of the 428 matches played versus the Warriors all-time.
Golden State Warriors
The nine-game win streak probably feels like it happened years ago at this point for the players and Steve Kerr. Since that point the Warriors 2-7 and struggling to put it mildly.
Certainly, the value of Draymond Green will never be questioned again since this recent spat of misfortune has proven precisely how much he does to improve the defense but also to free up players on offense.
Green is an oxymoron of sorts as an undersized center that is adept at ball handling and if we’re honest a bit of a basketball savant. He rarely attempts a 3-pointer anymore but it doesn’t matter with the Splash Brothers on the court.
What we’re witnessing in the current losses is shooting is great but you need someone to move the ball and set screens to make it effective. There’s no way the Mavs are trapping Curry for the entire fourth quarter if Green is in that game (as an example).
Damon Lee (quad) was upgraded to probable, Andre Iguodala (back) was downgraded to out, and Gary Payton II (knee) is out Saturday. Draymond Green (calf/back) and James Wiseman (knee) are out indefinitely.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers have reached a stage where many on the team just want the season to be over and based on body language or post-game interviews aren’t buying the rhetoric this can be a great team if both Anthony Davis and LeBron James are healthy.
Sure they give the right answers but look at their eyes and you know — they know. DeAndre Jordan was released and picked up by the 76ers but in his last game with LA, he threw a pass that went at least 6′ past the end zone and a good 3′ over the head of the player.
The jokes were plentiful – but if you’re Jordan knowing you could get picked up by a title contender maybe you are making that pass on purpose.
LeBron James (knee) is probable, Avery Bradley (knee) upgraded to probable while Talen Horton-Tucker (ankle) is questionable for Saturday. Anthony Davis (ankle), and Kendrick Nunn (knee) are both out indefinitely.

Expect the Lakers to come out aggressive in fact I expect both teams to come out aggressive given their recent struggles.
The Dubs should be favored and if they were playing in the Chase Center I’d feel good about them covering but with the game in LA and James’ desire to never get booed again (as part of the team – not personally) I’m betting they’ll keep it close.
