Season Series
Thursday, February 23rd, the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers play the third of four scheduled dates this season.
Golden State won the initial meeting on October 18th (123-109) while the Lakers won the February 11th match (109-103). LA will host the final meeting on March 5th.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Warriors winning three of the four contests. The Lakers hold the all-time record having bested the Warriors in 259 of their 432 matches.

Golden State Warriors
Returning from the break the defending champions still have major issues to fix and big questions to answer.
At the trade deadline, they added Gary Payton II but news of his abdominal injury means he’ll miss at least a month and that will put the Dubs’ desire to improve defensively on hold.
In addition, Steph Curry is still out (he’ll be reevaluated next Wednesday) with the team seeded ninth albeit they’re also in range of moving all the way up to third only 3.5 games back of the Kings.
That would require leapfrogging the Clippers (+2.5), Suns (+2), Mavericks (+1), and Wolves/Pelicans (+0.5) who they trail while also holding off the Thunder (-0.5), Jazz/Blazers (-1), and Lakers (-2.5).
Golden State has 24 games remaining and the 16th-ranked closing strength of schedule.
Stats
Golden State averages 118.6 points per game ranking second overall while shooting 47.9% from the field and 38.6% from deep ranking 12th and third respectively.
Warriors opponents score 118.5 points ranking 27th with them shooting 47.4% from the field and 36.3% from deep ranking 15th and 18th respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Stephen Curry, PG (OUT indefinitely—partial tears to his superior tibiofibular ligament)
- Andrew Wiggins SF (OUT—personal)
- Andre Iguodala, SF (OUT—hip)
- Gary Payton II (OUT indefinitely —adductor)
- Ryan Rollins, SG (OUT—foot)
Los Angeles Lakers
Considering how much air time the Lakers receive you’d think they were one of the home-court seeds. Yet, they sit 13th, two games behind the last play-in seed (Thunder).
Some pundits suggest the moves made at the deadline will allow LA to vault up to sixth. But I wonder if they’ve stopped to consider that means LA would need to pass seven teams and have only 23 games left to do that.
Helping their cause is they’ll play the sixth easiest closing schedule and notably play OKC (who has two games extra to play) twice more.
I bring up the latter because Shai Gilgeous-Alexander didn’t take too fondly to LeBron blocking his shot and said he’ll remember that the next time the teams play.

Stats
On the negative side, LA allows opponents to score an average of 118.2 points per game ranking 26th. Their opponents shoot 47.2% from the field and 34.7% from behind the arc ranking 14th and sixth respectively.
Another key point, the Lakers score 117.0 points per game which rank seventh-best while shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 33.7 percent from the perimeter ranking 10th and 26th respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Anthony Davis PF (probable—right foot stress injury)
- LeBron James SF (probable—foot, finger)

Free Golden State Warriors vs. Los Angeles Lakers NBA Prediction:
Two Western teams with arguably the biggest questions entering the stretch run are the defending champion Warriors and the Lakers. Both clubs need to win not just this game but as many games as possible in order to rise up the standings.
Although the Dubs haven’t fared well on the road (7-22) and might be missing Wiggins in addition to Curry they need to make a statement back from the break.
In contrast, the Lakers are eager to excel with their added depth and point fingers at Westbrook as the primary reason for their struggles.
As an aside add April 5th to your calendar and pray for a playoff series between the LA teams just so all the national pundits’ drama can be focused on one series.
