This is what we played the regular season for, and why we endured the feel-good stories of the Utah Jazz and New Orleans Pelicans knowing they never really stood a chance. We won’t go as far as to say that “this is the championship” but this series between the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors will give basketball fans exactly what they deserve out of a semifinal round.
Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors enter this series as the lower seed but as the favorites. And that’s not too surprising.
The Rockets jumped out to a hot start this season knowing they’d need home-court advantage in a seven-game series against the defending champions. The Dubs, however, are very comfortable in their own skin and never felt that earning the top seed was a priority.
Now, however, they’re on top of their game, with Stephen Curry back in the lineup.
Against Houston, the Warriors need to decide if they won’t to focus their energy on trying to simply outscore a team that is elite on offense and average on defense, or if it wants to buckle down on the point-preventing side knowing that the Rockets won’t be able to do the same.
Curry has had Chris Paul’s number over the years. But this isn’t the same Paul. This is the Paul that’s coming off maybe the best game of his postseason career and his able to breath easy when he doesn’t have the rock knowing James Harden is likely crossing someone up and stepping back for three.
For the Rockets to emerge victorious in this series, they have to find a way to win third quarters. Yes, we know they also have to contain at least one of Curry, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson—while also preventing Draymond Green from creating up top—but coming out of halftime with energy is going to be crucial.
Steve Kerr and the Warriors have become the masters of the third quarter, making even the toughest of opponents look worn down by their halftime adjustments.
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Houston Rockets NBA Series Prediction:
The longer this series lasts, the better you should feel about the Houston Rockets. If this series goes at least six games, the odds will start to shift in Harden and Co.’s favor.
But we have a sneaking suspicion the Warriors are going to put their serious hats on and get down to business early.
If the Dubs can steal at least one of the two games on the road to kick off the series, Houston is in trouble. A six- or seven-game series isn’t out of the question, but there’s a chance the Warriors step up and show just why they’re the favorites despite the lower of the two seeds.
